Three was when I noticed it in my son too, but at that age medication is just not an option. Our doctor and I discussed it at length for about three years before we decided to medicate as the best option. What really helped was cutting red dye 40 from his diet. I will tell you it does get complicated at times (like buying OTC medicines like Tylenol and juices), but it was worth it. Something else that I also noticed that really helped out my son and was suggested by my doctor was a small cup of coffee with a sugar free flavored creamer in it in the mornings. I know it sounds crazy to give an ADHD kid coffee, but caffeine works the same way as ADHD meds as they are actually both stimulants for a non ADHD person. In the same respect though many things that make a non ADHD person tired will have an adverse effect on those with ADHD (think how some people take Benadryl at bedtime if they struggle to fall asleep because it makes them sleepy, NOT the case with ADHD people. It actually over stimulates the brain and sends ADHD into high gear and takes forever to come down from). It can get super frustrating at times, but remember their little brains are wired completely different from those that don't have ADHD.
