Can anyone recommend a property management company? Or steer me away from one to avoid?

I would recommend AGS Realty. Really solid property management 202-333-1540. They serve the metro area.

It can be done, but it is not easy. I found a place a couple years ago for $1575 that was a three block walk from Braddock Rd. Metro. 2BR, W/D in-unit. Keep an eye on Craigslist and be ready to act quickly. If you're good with a 1BR, you might have more luck. There are lower-rent areas in Alexandria, if you're less picky about your neighbors.

Yes it can be done. I live in north Old Town and have a small 2 br with W/D and pay $1825/mo so I'm sure you could find a 1 br in your price range nearby. I had the best luck with craigslist and the real estate websites like zillow.com and homesdatabase.com You're more likely to find a good deal through private owners than through a managed property.

kingstowne is affordable and less than 20 min to potomac yards. yeah, it's kinda suburbany, but i walk less than a mile to the blue line and there are great restaurants. i might have a room for rent for $1000 in the near future if interested

Is this your range for a 1B or 2B? I lived here http://www.meridianbraddock.com/ a few years ago when i could afford to. 1B go for the 1700-1800 range though now. If you can afford it I would defiantly recommend it. Its right next to the metro, but the neighborhood always has decent off street options. Defiantly recommend doing the CL, esp if you want to find a diamond in the rough. Market prices on Rent went up around 200 bux everywhere in the last year, so best of luck
