A friend had someone from Austria come and sit their house and pets for free for 2 weeks, for the opportunity of visiting Calgary/Banff without having to pay for a hotel. Win/win.

Forget farming it out to freelancers. Hire a proper company. I used http://www.doglovewalking.com/ for a two week vacation. They came after I left, they were gone before I got back. House was like I'd never left, and they sent me a photo update of my dogs every day. 10/10 would use again.

I use Flying Duchess to look after my cat when I'm away, but they also do pocket pets! My sitter is absolutely lovely and takes good care of my cat - she also sends me a voicemail and photos every day so I know that she's in good hands. I've got three gerbils so I'm definitely familiar with the needs of rodents. And lucky you to have rats! I thought about getting them but didn't want to deal with the huge cages - gerbils can fit into much smaller living spaces. I usually finish work around 2-3 pm, home on the weekends.
