There are classes/workshops your current base should have to tell you exactly every thing you have to do like this one: http://drum.armymwr.com/us/drum/ft-drum-events/overseas-pcs-brief?eID=283971

http://hdoa.hawaii.gov/ai/aqs/animal-quarantine-information-page/ This is the website for animal quarantine. Get started right now if you want to avoid quarantine (and with it the expenses). Fallow their instructions to the Very last detail, but don't stress too much.

We pcs'ed to Hawaii in 2011 with our cat. The process to get your pet ready to move to Hawaii is a pain. I definitely suggest getting them prepared for the 5 day or less/airport release quarantine program. (Otherwise your dog will need to be quarantined for 120 days) The State of Hawaii page has information on their quarantine programs. I found the following link that includes a checklist. It's a bit of a read but hopefully it helps! http://hdoa.hawaii.gov/ai/files/2013/01/aqsbrochure.pdf I suggested starting the process asap!
What I do, for finding inexpensive hotel/apartment. . . . Go to Bookings.com, or some other hotel reservation site, filter for 2-3 star hotels, and see what is offered. When I find a hotel/apartment, I google the hotel for a phone number, call the hotel, and ask for the best rate they can give me for "X" number of nights. Especially, during this slack period in the tourist season, you might get a discount on the room. The other thing you might consider is searching on Warmshowers.org, filter for older person in Rome, then check out those folks. Find one who seems trustworthy :-) contact them and ask if you can send you package to them. Or, not!
Paul E. replied:
I also use booking.com, but to really see what the prices are for any given hotel etc use Trivago to compare all prices then go directly to the hotels booking site and see what their prices are. I do this in Japan and generally find that the hotels will beat both booking.com and any other site as they take a fair wad of money from the hotel in question for their bookings.

I also use booking.com and found rates often better than ones advertised on hotel's actual websites. You can find a place you like and soft book it (make sure you use the Free Cancellation rate). Then contact them and ask if it's ok to have a package sent to them. I've never done that myself, but find that nicer hotels are a bit more accommodating.

Wow, that is a freaking great area to tour! have fun! As far as hotels... try the hotel.com, priceline... etc... You can find all sorts of last minute deals pretty cheap if you are willing to wing it a bit.

Not sure of a place in Caracas, but wanted to recommend the camera I've been using for about 2 years now: a FUJIFILM XP50. Pretty waterproof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZvkguuGx90&list=UUHyRS8 bRu6 zPoymgKaIoDLA&index=15

Looking for hotels [Staying in Anchorage] Hello everyone, I need some help getting an idea of which local hotel's are good for family's and don't have bed bugs and...
MaintainThis replied:
I would go with any of the larger chains, stay away from Spernard and the Black Angus downtown if you go small business.
Shaeos replied:
Embassy suite is always great. Best western. Do not do the bent prop in - bedbugs galore.

Recently held a conference at the Hyatt House... dirt cheap, brand new, and SO NICE. 10/10
Nivzamora replied:
I like Golden Lion Best Western. They have a great in house restaurant too. Also very disabled friendly (which matters to some people) The staff are always on point and friendly, very good about making sure their people are happy. I've been staying there for years about every 3 months when I come to town for dr appts. I've never had a bad visit, not even a "well it'll do but it's kinda ucky" visit XD

Hotel Captain Cook is my favorite place to stay in Anchorage.

Depending on the time of the year Parkside Guest House is great. The family that runs Camp Denali runs it but it's only open for 4 months. If you don't mind driving a bit Alyeska is an option.
RoamingGeek replied:
The Sheraton downtown had good prices this time of year and very comfortable beds.
edubya replied:
Don't forget Airbnb. This time of year, many owners slash their rates.
kinnaq replied:
Residence Inn Marriott has some rooms that are two bedroom suites with kitchens. Two queens and a couch. Hard to find them online, so you may need to call. Probably one of the best breakfasts. Unlike some places that only have bagel and coffee, this has eggs, meats, fruit, cereals... every morning. And some days of the week in winter, monday through wednesday maybe, they have dinner too. Not tons of food, but a free hotdog or taco can be perfect if you are on a budget. I have never had a bad experience, but a friend said they had to ask for a different room. Something hadn't been cleaned right.
alpenglowadmirer replied:
Hyatt House, which hasn’t been open very long, is great. Clean rooms, full breakfast in the mornings, offer plenty of amenities to borrow (board games, curling iron, etc) and currently has decent rates. Only bummer is that they don’t have a hot tub, just a pool.
akairborne replied:
VRBO and Airbnb are the best bets, especially if you have kids and/or dealing with families. This time of year you can find a nice 2 or 3 bedroom with a fully equipped kitchen for the price of a hotel.
akvw replied:
The main chains are all good. But so many to recommend we really need more details on what you want, area, price, etc etc.

Definitely embassy suites

My favorite hotel is My Place, but it isn't in a very centralized location for touristy stuff. The Westmark and Captain Cook are popular downtown hotels that would give you good access to shops and restaurants. Stay away from Coastal Inn by the airport if you don't want an older hotel with lots of wear and tear.
