Wow, that is a freaking great area to tour! have fun! As far as hotels... try the hotel.com, priceline... etc... You can find all sorts of last minute deals pretty cheap if you are willing to wing it a bit.

Airbnb.Com. warmshowers is great but you got to be fairly accurate in date turning up why it mig be more convenient to use airbnb

Taiwan is the best place to camp. every night on west coast, i was camping. I just search for a park and pitch hammock. the locals will ignore me even when they saw me. Camping is well-accepted by locals. so don't worry about security and where to find camping spots.. here is my account of Taiwan http://worldonboards.blogspot.com/search/label/Taiwan

I stayed at Meander inn in Taipei. My son and I left our bike boxes in their huge basement for a week. They were very friendly and centrally located, highly recommended http://meander.com.tw/

Does anyone on here know Scotland well? Trying to plan a light mini-tour from Glasgow to go see Fingal's cave. Ideally 3 or so days on the bike, staying in hostels, and...

Should be doable, Glasgow up to Oban, is a lovely route but never done it on a bike.... ? Depending on which boat tour and where it leaves from, you could bike right up round over the Corran ferry and over the hill to Lochaline and get ferry from there to Mull. Before heading back to Oban for train back to Glasgow? Lots of options, only limitations are your legs and imagination ; -) good luck and happy planning. Just for info: http://www.staffatours.com/destinations/isle-of-staffa/fingals-cave/

Not done the actual trip but have cycled some of this area. Looking at possible routes such as Glasgow to Oban to Craignure to Fionnphort to Staffa / Fingal's Cave. Here's a quick route I did on RideWithGPS http://ridewithgps.com/routes/9485956 Distance Glasgow to Oban is around 95 miles on busy A roads. Catch Calmac ferry from Oban to Craignure on Mull. Distance on Mull from Craignure to Fionnphort is around 35 miles. Catch Staffatours ferry from Fionnphort / Iona to Fingal's Cave on Staffa. For accommodation I recently used Oban Youth Hostel which was fine. On Mull there's a bunkhouse in Craignure near the ferry. At Fionnphort there's B&B accommodation (used some time ago but can't remember which). On Iona there's Iona Hostel (not used myself). As you have 3 days, maybe think about taking a direct train both ways between Glasgow and Oban, then cycle the Mull section both ways to make the most of your available time.

I'm a farmer here in Scotland but on the south east coast and my experience of the west is that they have five times the amount of rain that we have here so bring some good waterproofs and have a great time...............I've not been to Fingalls Cave yet!

Olive T. Green But I take the bus from Cork to New Ross, since I do not have enough time to do all of this and still have time to go to Inishmore, enjoy some time in Cork and Dublin and keep it relaxed all the way.

When I toured Ireland nearly 20 years ago - I used this fantastic book as my guide - it is not a guide book - but the author went in search of the best music places - there are some great off the beaten path places! The book is also a fantastic read! http://www.publishersweekly.com/978-0-7735-1344-0

Just found this. Many mountain passes are closed during the winter. http://www.freewheelingfrance.com/where-to-go/when-to-cycle-in-the-french-alps.html "As a general rule, passes that are lower than 2,000 m are closed from November to April/May, passes at altitudes of between 2,000 m and 2,500 m are closed from late October to late May/early June, and passes above 2,500 m are closed from mid-October to early/mid June." So looks like they'll be closed. If the pass is closed, can't I just go under / over the gate / fence / whatever is put up?
