What type of car? I agree with John Sprentall, Japanese auto is the way to go if you have a foreign vehicle. They were not only reasonably priced but when I took my older vehicle there they didn't "overdo" what they needed to do on my car. They gave me a list and helped me decide which items to fix based on my budget and the priorities of the vehicle.

My husband Bryan is a mechanic at Main Street Motors on Main and Depot downtown A2. It's a great shop. Obviously I'm biased, but they just received Most Trustworthy shop in the 2013 Current Magazine Reader's Choice, so I'm not alone.:)

Made it to E Lansing. Will follow up on phone calls in the morning to see if it is indeed the transmission or not. Here's the thing about my car. I had her for the past 230,000 miles. Might be time to let her go, but cant stand the thought of having a monthly car payment. Ugh. This day has been the worst of the year.

So I've heard great things about Malek's on Jackson as well as Japanese auto on main street (if he has a Japanese car).

Quality Auto in Ypsi has worked on to of our cars and I've always been happy with them. They even did a surprise free oil change once. I came by to pick it up and they said "don't worry about it". Made that shitty weekend feel a bit better.

I always go to [Pro Auto Techs](http://www.proautotechs.com). Clear assessments, no upselling. You can talk straight about what repairs are necessary.

Late responding, but I like A2 Auto Center at Packard and Stadium. It doesn't look like much - it's in a Citgo gas station. However, the owner Majed is the only mechanic ever to not automatically treat me like an idiot because I'm a woman. He does good work, his prices are fair, and he's an honest man. I'd highly recommend him and the shop.
jacobiusmobius replied:
Broadway Auto is just great. They fixed out a sensor issue on my Hyundai which another shop in A2 couldn't figure out. They're walkable from campus (esp. hospital) which is why I checked them out in the first place.
rdonnelly replied:
I've gone to Auto Tech Center the last couple of times I've needed to take my car in. Don't have anything to complain about and will likely use them again in the future when needed. They seem genuine and randomly sent me a Sweetwaters gift card a couple weeks after my service. http://www.auto-tech.us

We've had good experiences at Ann Arbor Transmission on carpenter. Definitely don't trust Belle. In an estimate they charged us 3 times for brake hardware...which already comes with the brakes.

I moved here about six months ago with an old Volvo. I had a lifelong, reliable and trustworthy Volvo specialist mechanic back home and was nervous to find a new mechanic here that I trusted. Thankfully, I moved very nearby Mallek's on Jackson (right where Huron becomes Jackson at the split of dexter and Jackson) on the west side of town. They've replaced a thermostat, my break pads, and my blinker lamp and I completely trust them. John, the owner is incredibly pleasant and thorough. I fell they are very fair and very honest. They do free estimates too so it's worth calling them. I do recommend calling since sometimes they do have to do appointments since they are a small operation.

looking for recommendations for a good mechanic/dealer for pre-purchase inspection (Ann Arbor) Hii
I have to do a pre-purchase inspection. I have never owned a car...
round_a_squared replied:
Take it to Main Street Motors. If they still run the same inspection deal they used to, if they inspect it and you buy it, you can put the cost of the inspection over to repairing anything they found. As far as pros & cons? Taking it to a dealer, you run the risk that they play up any problems in the interest of getting you to buy one of their cars instead. (I assume you're not talking about taking it to the same dealer you're thinking of buying it from.) An independent shop theoretically has nothing to gain or lose from the sale.

Thank you all for your recommendations. I will give Steve Steeb, Rons Garage, Main street motors, and Fawzi's a call tomorrow..choose from one of them. Btw, do you guys know whether they are good for hondas/toyotas? I was looking at yelp, and there was one that popped up: http://www.yelp.com/biz/japanese-auto-professional-service-ltd-ann-arbor. it seems like they deal with japanese cars. Have any of you dealt with them?
mizmoose replied:
When I was looking for my current vehicle, I took all the cars I was looking at to Fawzi's on Stadium. They had a deal where they would do a pre-purchase inspection of a car for a flat rate (I want to say $50, but it's been a few years). They looked at 4 cars for me until I bought one, advised me on why not to buy the first three (ex. found signs of accidents, damaged engine, etc.) and, when it came to the one I bought, pointed out its few flaws and gave me an idea of what I should offer for it.
