These guys are slightly out of the way in Mentone, but imo they're worth it. http://www.mentonemotafix.com.au/ I've been a customer with them for well over 10 years and they've been fantastic, reliable and they always go through every little thing they've done to my car - sometimes in too much detail! hah.

Closer to home than some of these suggestions but still not in Nunawading. I've had great experience with the guys at http://www.dnmechanicalrepairs.com.au Run by the same two old Italian guys for 30+ years theyre a good sort.

Avoid Greythorn in Doncaster Not sure if they're stupid, got an apprentice to do my car, or were just trying to take advantage because I'm female But I was overcharged (which I got down to quote price because I know my shit) but I missed where they put in a battery that was too large for my car, they stretched the bracket and it died in 2 weeks, was told I was lucky it didn't overpower and blow stuff up

We just take our 1999 camry to K-Mart auto once a year. no complaints, never broken down, price isn't too bad. Consistent service, no surprises. They did tell us 8 months ago to buy a replacement soon because it will soon cost more to replace the worn out parts than it's worth now. It's worth less than the bike racks on the roof ;-)

when i lived in nunawading i used to go to the one on the corner of central road and blackburn road (right near blackburn station). i think it was called jj dynamotive. they were really good for me, they are worth considering.

I can recommend Eastside Automatics in Mulgrave. Had a transmission problem with my 2010 territory and they sorted me out for $1,500 when Chadstone Ford wanted close to $4,000. Been going there ever since and always been happy with them. http://www.eastsideautomatics.com.au

I wouldn't usually suggest a chain, but like the comments about Kmart, sometimes you find a good one. Ultra Tune in Croydon has been taking care of my wife's Lancer for years, always good service and price, no bullshit. Plus, it's on the train line for you, so easy travel.

(full disclosure: I have newer vehicles that haven't needed substantial work. So, I haven't taken a vehicle to either of these places in recent years. However, I used them numerous times previously and was always satisfied with their service.) - Authorized Wheel & Brake in Westlake (CenterRidge & Clague). - Seaway Gas & Petroleum in the Flats (Sunoco on Columbus) Both places will get you in and turn it around pretty quickly. Their prices are reasonable, They'll treat you fairly. Authorized is especially knowledgeable on trucks/4x4s. You can search/post to Nextdoor.com, too (web forum for your immediate neighborhood). The 'mechanic' question gets asked a fair amount. I can say that in Lakewood, a lot of people recommend Bruce's but I have no experience with them.

Take a look at the mechanic shop here if you're in Lakewood: https://g.co/kgs/PDZJBf I was referred here because of their honesty/service and my experience was great as well.

Don't think you need anymore suggestions, but White Wheel near Triskett and Lorain. Took my car there, told Mike "put a new belt on it". Didn't ask if I needed it, just told him to do it. He calls me later... "Are you sure? You really don't need one..."

Good experiences at Plain Brothers. The one place you don't want to go to is the place on Madison, Calanni's.
