Recommendations are now open for home builders. I am looking to start initial interviewing and rough pricing. Who would you recommend to me? Ready... Go.

As you can see, this is not an easy choice. I am a few weeks into this process and here is what I have found. Builders/General Contractors can be organized by the number of homes they build a year. On one side you will find builders who build a few homes per year. They don't have design centers, they don't build spec homes, they don't have a lot of buying power. They pay their sub contractors fair prices and sub contractors are happy to work for them. They don't cut corners and they take a lot of pride in building homes. They work hard to build the perfect home for you. On the other end of the scale you will find Builders who build 100 homes a year. They build cookie cutter homes in big subdivisions. They buy 15 lots and build spec homes knowing the homes will sell because of the trendy location. They have big design centers managed by sales people who can show one of the 6 standard design packages you can choose from to finish your home. The have a lot of buying power so they pinch on the sub contractors to get the lowest price. The sub contractors are not happy and rush to get the job done. The builders might cut corners on plumbing fixtures, sub grade work, ect to save $1,000 on every home they build. The kinds of things that might not show up for 10 or 15 years but saves the Builders $100,000 over 100 homes. These builders place a higher priority on curb appeal and resale value over your own personal needs. Most people recommend you interview several builders until you find one you can trust. In reality, all these builders or their sales people are "professional" used car salesmen. They are all extremely nice and trustworthy. So choosing based off of interviews can be very challenging. Really the question comes down to what kind of home you are looking for. If you do not plan on staying in the home for a long time, want the biggest home you can build for the cheapest price, and want something you can sell very easy in 5 years then choose one of the bigger companies. They can do it better. If you are building a home for you and you plan on staying there for a long time then choose a smaller builder. Good Luck!

Mike Van Handel Construction or MVH Construction. We've been in our home for 3 weeks and couldn't be any happier. It's only him and his brother but great work. It goes back to what Eric said, depends how long you are staying. If you are in it for the long haul I highly highly recommend MVH. So particular and left him with our house code today to put our patio door lock in. Come check our place out anytime. Highly recommend.
