Hi Jake! I joined Arlington Health and Fitness (right by CVS at Alewife Brook) during the winter of 2015. Remember that one? It was very cheap, friendly, close, and no-frills. All I ever used was the tread mill, too. At the time I joined month-to-month with no strings attached.

Hi all - just moved to Arlington, close to the center. Would love any suggestions/thoughts on a good gym close by. Are there any with indoor pools? Childcare would be a...
Francesca L. replied:
Probably BSC in Lexington if you want a pool, then there's various YMCA locations but I am unsure which one has a pool. Otherwise there's Gold's and Arlington Health & Fitness. I don't think AHF has childcare, Gold's does. AHF has a lot of stuff crammed into their space, but it's a gym and does the job. I go to Gold's, despite the reviews (which are mostly regarding cleanliness and ABC financial). Just make sure you read what you sign and ask a lot of questions about fees!
Matt L. replied:
North Suburban YMCA in Woburn has an indoor lap pool and a heated zero entry pool, a wide range of well maintained cardio equipment, free weights and weight machines, and a slew of classes on everything from yoga to power lifting. Membership also allows you to use the Y in Waltham, which has both indoor and (in the summer) outdoor pools. Both Y's have child care onsite.
Janette L. replied:

Katie M. replied:
I don’t know much about Arlington health and fitness but if you’re into classes a place called sweat fixx just opened up across the way and a spinning place is opening by the high school soon.
Michele B. replied:
I've been a member of Arlington Health and Fitness for more than 14 years. It does not offer classes, which is fine by me because I'm not a class person. It also isn't super fancy with all the latest gizmos. It has tons of cardio equipment, weight machines, free weights, and kettlebells, which are all I need. And the owner, Dave, is extremely good about keeping it clean, so it almost never smells like a gym except on super hot summer days. There are several really good trainers, and I love the people. It's like Cheers at a gym--you get to know everyone who is there when you go; it's all regular folks of all ages, shapes, and sizes (not crazy muscle guys or women who really just want to show off the latest in yoga pants and sports bras); just a generally good atmosphere. My only complaint is the AC in the hot months is just not set cool enough. Otherwise, I like it a lot.
Melissa W. replied:
