I think Consumer Reports has done an article and possibly some ratings...can get it online now.

I'm pretty sure we can access Consumers' Checkbook for free via the library's electronic database. I believe you can do this from your own home computer as long as you have a library card. I did it a few weeks ago.

Change it what I just wrote -- it was Consumer Reports that I accessed through the library from home. But I know Consumers' Checkbook is also part of the library's electronic database.

I switched to a tankless system several years ago. I replaced my electrical panel to handle the extra amps. It's worked like a dream, and I have two full baths. I used Kohl electric for the panel work, and Dwyer plumbing for the install. I bought the water heater from Hone Depot. I believe I spent about $1800 total. Again, it works like a dream.

Have you considered an indirect water heater? Your furnace heats the water and it's much more efficient and lasts forever. When I had a house, we installed one, after researching instant water heaters. We decided, at the time, to also change our furnace to a super, energy efficient one by Buderus. We started saving money immediately on our bills, and the house was much more evenly warm. You do not need to replace your furnace to be able to install an indirect water heater. We had the work done by Charles Lovett Plumbing. They are the best!
