The Rose Garden where the Bill Anderson monument first stood was part of a service station which was operated in 1928 by E.B. Crowe. It was known as the Red Star Service Station and sold Standard Gas. Later Penn McDuffie operated the station and sold Gulf Gasoline. The service station had two drive through sections with three pumps. Nearer the present time Leo Black had a shoe store and shoe shop in the building which became the office of Norman Langston.

Next door to the Leo Black Shoe Store and Shop was a grocery store opened in the mid-1930's by Robert Moore who ran it until he went into the automobile business. He sold it to Charlie Beard. In the upstairs of this building, at one time Miss Jessie Wood and Mrs. Paige operated a Beauty Shop. Col. R.L.J. Smith and his son Sumner Smith had their law offices in the North section upstairs.

I can remember the way Leo Black's shop smelled of leather. Bill Carson is right about the location of Black's. I don't remember the Red Star Station, but I do remember Mr.Crowe an Mr McDuffie as people, but not the stations.
