Can anyone recommend a good counselor or therapist? I'm looking to get help for anxiety and depression. I'd prefer to see someone off of a recommendation rather than...

I highly recommend [Christopher Cobb](https://www.healthgrades.com/provider/christopher-cobb-3 ych9). If you have trouble tracking down his contact info, send me a PM.

Amy Scully, Decatur Family Psychiatry has helped me a great deal. And she charges $90 for 90 min.

I had a good experience with [Samantha Heuwagen](https://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/name/Samantha_Heuwagen_MA,MFT,ACS_Atlanta_Georgia_299231). She's in Dunwoody and had pretty cheap rates.

Ryan Bailey (was in Decatur, Tucker now so it could be a drive) has been wonderful.

The [Highland Psych Collaborative](http://highlandcollaborative.com/) is located on Seminole Ave between North and Ponce. I'm seeing someone there for grief counseling. There is also the [Secular Therapist Project](https://www.seculartherapy.org/) that may be worth looking into. I found the person I see at Highland Psych through the Secular Therapist project.

Midtown Psychotherapy is located next door to the Masonic Lodge on Peachtree. http://www.midtownpsychotherapy.org. I've seen the 2 founding partners, Amy Smith-Barnes and Meg McLeroy and they're both great.

[Metropolitan Counseling Services](http://www.mcsatlanta.org/) is a great place is you're on a budget. They work with you on finding a reasonable payment plan, and they have great therapists for a range of issues.

I really like Eric Groh. He is very experienced and helped me quite a bit. I can't recall if depression and anxiety are among his specialties. I believe I found him through Psychology Today's therapist finder. It lists the number of years of experience. So if he doesn't fit the bill, then maybe that will help you find someone.

I met with a guy named Don Durke three times. You should look him up. He was cheap, had Yoda everywhere and honestly--everyone's different--but he changed my life.

Do you need someone near Little 5 or do you work elsewhere and need somewhere near there? Do you want to use insurance or are self-pay? Heartwork Counseling & Eric Groh (listed by others) also have good reputations. Ilene Schroeder is in the Poncey Highland area (no ins). Debra Moore in Decatur. Ana Adelstein. Not sure if they take insurance or not. If you'll go into Decatur, there are a bunch, but most are not on panels. Good luck to you.

My wife is a clinical psychologist (she sees kids, though). One thing to keep in mind is that depending on how bad your anxiety and depression are, you might be prescribed psychotropic medication. Cognitive behavioral therapy (think "talk therapy") used by most modern psychologists outside of NYC is extremely helpful in treating anxiety and depression. Ph.D. clinical psychologists usually have the most complete training with this, but they don't prescribe medication. You'll need a doctor for that. Someone below mentions that they see a psychiatric group at a rate of $90 for 90 minutes. That person is a social worker, though, not a psychiatrist. It is EXTREMELY RARE for psychiatrists to do that sort of counseling. Honestly, they usually see patients for 8-15 minutes at a time and write prescriptions. If you'll need meds, your best bet is to find a group that has MDs and PhDs on the staff. Such groups in Atlanta usually have social workers ("MSWs") or licensed professional counselors ("LPCs") on their staff. The counselors will work with the psychiatrist for prescriptions. As a general rule, the hierarchy of training among "counselors" goes like this (in order): Psychologists MSWs LPCs Most PhD psychologists spend as much time in school as MDs, but MDs have to do a long (3-7 years) residency. PhDs usually do a one-year internship and a one-year post-doctoral fellowship before they get licensed. Also, as a general rule, most PhD programs are more academically rigorous that PsyD programs, and PhD programs are generally more difficult to get into. PsyDs are common with for-profit schools like Argosy. My wife is a PhD, so I'm biased, but if I had to choose between a PsyD and a PhD, I'd pick the PhD every time.
Female therapist needed for a sexual assault survivor Don't fret: I scoured the archives before I posted.
I urgently need recommendations for a *female* therapist...
flamants replied:
Do you urgently need the recommendation or actually need to see someone urgently? A hotline or rape crisis center might be better in the latter case, as I imagine most therapists wouldn't be able to fit a new patient in for several weeks at least.

Ana Adelstein is already listed here. [Tara Williams](http://www.highlandpsychological.com/about/) [Katie Davino](http://www.therapyinatlanta.com/) [Suzann Lawry](http://www.suzannlawry.com/) Given that it is right before the holidays, it is may be hard to get an appointment this week. For crisis services, do a web search for "community service board" and the name of the county she lives in. Each has their own hotline resources. [Here is a listing of Rape Crisis Centers in the area](http://gnesa.org/rcc-by-county). I can't vouch for them, but it's a place to start. And, for help finding resources: [RAINN](https://www.rainn.org/). Good luck to you/whomever you are looking for.

Powers Ferry Psychology has multiple people that seem to fit what you are asking for. My family has personal experience with them, I trust them with my child, trust me that says a lot. They have multiple offices, including intown. It may be hard to see someone urgently right now, as a lot of people are on vacation for the holidays in the coming weeks, so have pretty booked schedules right now. If you are in need please know there is no shame in calling a crisis line, seeking out a friend, etc. Nothing will make things worse than being alone in a time of need. Also, regardless of religious affiliations there are organizations like Jewish Family and Career Services and The Link Counseling Center that offer counseling on a sliding scale. Don't let finances stop you (or your loved one).
