Get here first Go to a magazine shop Thumb through a few modified bike magazines Hundreds of thousands of parts for all motorbike. Maybe do something different. Automatic or maybe a wave or KSR. Parts and shop work is way cheap Personally I'm working on a wave 125RS I got for a little over $100 and a CBR150 I got for $400. Hard to go wrong at those prices. Have a few other bikes on my radar too

Tim S. replied:
Thanks Gareth. I ended up buying a Trek at www.Probike.co.th. They speak great English and were the first shop (after going to 6-7 different places) that took time with me and paid at least some attention to fitting. Most shops had no clue what size bike to sell me, they just showed me whatever was biggest. Not only that but there were no pedals so I couldn't check leg extension. ProBike on the other hand wouldn't even consider a frame smaller than than 21.5" based on my height and inseam. Even at that size my seat is pretty high. I didn't visit them, but it seemed that WorldBike would be a good option as well. They primarily sell Giant AFAIK. Perhaps Thai speakers will have a better experience with other shops, but competency is not language dependent so I am doubtful. It looks like there's another bike show at Seacon Square in May if anyone else is looking. (I don't know if this is 2015, I can't read Thai dates). http://www.culturecycliste.com/seacon-bangkae-bicycle-show/ (FTR, culturecycliste mainly sells LA bicycles made here in Thailand. I found them very unhelpful. I had to find sizes on my own. Their knowledge of what was on their showroom floor was poor and they didn't make any effort to search). On the contrary, ProBike had everything computerized and could easily check on the computer. They pointed out several discounted 2013 and 2014 models in my size but not on display.

There are actually a bunch of good bike shops. Lad Phrao Bike shop on Lad Phrao near soi 101 is very popular, with lower prices. Also Bike Station at Pattanakarn soi 53. These both have lower overhead than the shops in the central business district, so the taxi ride to get there pays for itself. Pro Bike, on the north side of Lumpini Park, is also good.

Dr Bike on Chok Chai 4 are very good and if they don't have the parts they'll know where to get them. If your bike shop Thai isn't up to scratch I would recommend bringing a friend who can speak Thai or have written down and pictures of what you want doing. Last time I was there they had a quick turnover, two days to fabricate a custom frame for a back box and slide protectors. Good luck!

Backbox and frame came to a total of 5,800 might sound expensive but the frame was made to a high standard with a solid powder coat that matches the bike and attached rock solid to the bike and the box was a Shad box. The the sliders cost 4,800 including all parts and labour, Bikers brand. All parts and colours matching the bike also. All done at Dr. Bike ps. I don't work there just a happy customer:D

Your only realistic option is to buy one. Get someone who can read Thai and check out dealfish.co.th. You won't be able to cross over into Cambodia or Laos without filling out a shit ton of paperwork (don't bother). Renting is a possibility if you're only going a few hundred km within THailand, but you absolutely must get insurance before you set off, and this will either entail getting your international bike license sent over from home, or alternatively you could get a Thai license; it's straightforward, cheap and only takes a few hours.

Cherry bike in Chiang Mai and Bok Bok Bike in Bangkok both have good selections and can order stuff for you, too. Bangkok-Singapore is an extremely well-traveled route, you'll probably meet cyclists every day on your way down. You can either stick on the main highway and get there quick, or take all the twisty coastal roads, much more confusing but also more pleasant! Taking the detour over to Ranong is also well worth it if you've got the time. Here are some photos and stories from that part of my ride: http://threeruleride.com/2014/04/the-isthmus-of-kra/
