Any recommendations for a nice Italian restaurant in the Binghamton area (or up to 30 minutes away) Title says it all. No Olive Garden, please! :-)

Oaks Inn in Endicott (on Oak Hill Ave across from the park). Great little place and very decently priced. I would definitely call ahead for reservations (especially on a Friday or Saturday). Cortese Restaurant on Robinson St in Binghamton. Monday's they usually have a half price special on pizza and on spaghetti. Also probably a good idea to call ahead for reservations. Also in Endicott, you have Nirchi's on the Avenue (Washington Ave) and Tony's on Main Street. I've only been to the sit down Nirchi's once and I'm not a huge fan of Tony's, but a lot of people in the area do like them.

Original Italian Pizza in Endicott or Owego

My favorite is Michaelangelo's on Upper Court Street. Excellent food, and their pizza is easily one of the best in the area. Consols in Endicott or Vestal is another good one.

One of the great things about this area is the quality of Italian food. Some stand out above the rest, but for the most part you won't find a bad meal anywhere. It all comes down to personal preference at the end of the day and how you like the sauce (or, as you would most likely refer to it, gravy). Those who prefer a sweeter sauce will say Little Venice http://littlevenicerestaurant.com/. Plus, I think their homemade pasta is the best. It has always stood out to me above the rest because this has forever been our "family" restaurant. The Lisio family who owns it are involved in every aspect of the business and are some of the nicest people I know. Everyone I have taken there from out of town really loves it. Cortese: http://www.corteserestaurant.com/. Another great spot with a varied menu Oaks Inn. Old School Italian Restaurant. Tough to get into as seating is limited. Tremendous food, reasonably priced. Cacciatore's - http://www.cacciatores-restaurant.com/ another favorite. It may lack the history and ambiance of the other mentioned places, but the food is top notch. Every time I go there I get the veal parm because it is one of the best I ever had. Tony's Italian Grill. http://www.tonysitaliangrill.com/. Good solid Italian food. Nothing outstanding, yet nothing disappointing. Great atmosphere. Michelangelo's. http://www.michelangelosristorante.com/. Ambiance-wise, this is probably more like a pizzeria than an actual restaurant but the food is top notch. I usually go there for lunch from time to time, but it seems every time I am there the place is crowded. You won't hear anyone say a bad thing about this place and rightly so.

Cortese is good if you've got the money. If not, Cacciatore's

Cortese's, Michealangelo's, and Donoli's are my favorite three in the area. Donoli's is in Apalachin though. It's about a 20 min drive, but right off the highway.

What was the name of the restaurant across fom the Big R? (dating myself) They had a wonderful Sunday brunch and the best prime rib in town.
Connie K. replied:
I still think of Rural King as Big R. Silver Lake was Russow's(they sold it and then took it back and ran it again) and before that Witmyers. When I taught at Daniel Webster we went there for lunch some days. We had at least an hour for lunch then.
Tom G. replied:
Silver Lake (Whitmeyer's) had great perch back in the day. Just the thing a good Catholic boy needed on Fridays back then. Sambos was the pancake house by the mall. They were a huge chain at one time.

A co-worker just mentioned a restaurant/diner in Bainbridge that was referred to as "The Squat & Gobble" back in the '70s. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks!

Suggestion: Visit Forker locally owned restaurants for food/beverages. I know of two '89ers that have a restaurant. One '90 has a golf course. Anybody else??
