Mattresses are the biggest rip-off ever. They claim that a simple combination of wood/metal/fabric made in a factory in China is the same value as a high end big screen TV.

Costco has a few for under $300. You did not specify a size you are looking for.

Find a flyer with a cheap mattress, take it into sleep country and ask them to match the price. This is how we’ve bought all our mattresses and have been really happy so far.

Regardless of where or when you buy, tell the salesman you just want a colour mismatch set. I saved a bunch of money by buying a box spring that had light silver accents and a mattress with slightly lighter silver accents. You never see the mattress colour/pattern anyways so no reason to pay more for it.

The mattress industry is pretty shady as it is. There are lots of websites you can read up on it at, but they make it impossible for you to compare prices - no 2 places will have the same make/models, markups are astronomical, and there's so many buzz words/features that don't do anything but make it more expensive and sound special. In the end if you get anything less than 50% off the regular retail price at any major retailer (sleep country, sears, the brick etc), you paid too much. My buddy bought a couple through these people and it seemed pretty good. He seemed to get a great deal without all the BS. I'll likely be using them next time. http://www.themattressgirlsandguys.com/

harshjay replied:
Read up about sleep country / all mattress sales on red flag deals site. Take regular price, reduce by 85%, offer that price right away for the one you want. Do not include any sheets, pillows, treatments, etc. You will get a fair price, not waste their time, and be in and out quickly.
Noise_Kisses replied:
I'd suggest trying to find a floor model if possible. When I got mine from Sleep Country 2 years back now they let me know that they rotate the floor model ever 2-3 months. With the bed I fell in love with they had one they needed to get rid of and it has a scuff on one corner of the box spring so I ended up getting it for 80% off.

I was highly impressed with the sales person I dealt with at Mattress Mattress in the NE. She actually seemed like she cared about her job and that I got a mattress that was properly suited for me. The process was so much better than any other store I visited. I didn't end up buying from there, however, but that's only because I stumbled across the Chinook Sears' closing sale, and I got a $1400 serta memory foam mattress for half price.
yankebugs replied:
I'm not sure about boxing day sales, but mattresses (brand new) are really cheap at liquidation places. Queen size mattresses there are like $300.

I have NOT purchased a mattress from these guys, but my aim is to replace my memory-foam topped mattress within the next couple of years. After reading up on them a bit, I'd say the pros to buying from them are that you get a warranty on the mattress, and because it's handmade you can have it adjusted to your desired firmness whenever you need to. There's no doubt in my mind that you get what you pay for, but something that can be rebuilt and mended instead of junked after 3-5 years (which is what the average unrealistic lifespan of a mattress IS), it's worth the price tag. However, I'd check in with them and see what you actually GET for the cost, and what that cost would be exactly.

We just purchased a new mattress the other day. I tried to do some research online but didn't really get anywhere. Our first stop as Mattress Mattress, their service is fantastic and they gave us a great rundown on all the different mattress options. After shopping around we went back and purchased a Kingsdown for a pretty good price. There is a new location in Airdrie that just opened up, they seemed to have some pretty good deals going.
ben_laowai replied:
Hopefully, I'm not too late g0d5hands, but I have some experience in the mattress industry. Never sold at the big box but helped import materials for a local manufacturer. Short answer: Go to IKEA! I literally put 40 hours of research, cost analysis for major store brands and it is a scam, pure and simple. Where else can you take 80 dollars of product, 3.5 hours of labor and sell it for 2000 bucks? IKEA is the best dollar for dollar. I would suggest a spring coil mattress with a latex core and a topped with a layer of cotton. This will be comfortable for 80% of sleepers. Pure latex can cause some soreness as it is too yielding, and can be too hot for some people. The cotton layer and spring coill eliminates this risk. IKEA also lets you stay as long as you want, so spend 30 minutes on it. 5 minutes wont do. PM if you want any more detail.

There is such a thing as an air mattress patch kit - Canadian Tire, Army & Navy, BassPro, Campers Village should all carry them.

You could probably use a patch for a bicycle tire tube. (Hardware stores, sporting goods/bike shops, etc.)

You could probably use bike tire repair kit. Otherwise duct tape might be your best (and cheapest) option.

MEC, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Rona, Home Hardware... Probably more, but that should cover 2/3 of the city.

The fastest & cheapest is Tuck Tape. If you know where the leak is and the surface is smooth (not textured like some are) then Tuck Tape is a 5 second fix that works forever with essentially 0 mess. Yes, that's Tuck, not duck, tape. Designed to fill holes in vapour barrier in your house. I've used it for air mattress repairs in the past.
