Good Boston-area moving companies? We're moving (this weekend!) and the usual get-the-guys-to-help-out plan fell through, and we need movers. I've tried looking at...

Gentle Giant! No first-hand experience; I just have a few friends who work there. From what I hear they're good, but expensive. They're in Somerville.

I work for a company that moves people's stuff, called [Lazybones](http://www.mylazybones.com). So you probably won't trust my candid opinion of them being good, affordable and reliable.

We've moved twice: once from Belmont to Worcester, then from Worcester to Newburyport. On our first move we used Gentle Giant. It was not inexpensive, but they were incredibly professional, competent, and no nonsense. Worth every penny we spent. Moving to Newburyport we used someone else (I can't (and don't want to) remember who) and it was a disaster: they completely underestimated the size of the move and brought a truck that was too small. We ended up having to rent a U-Haul and finish the move on our own. Unfortunately at such short notice I'd be surprised if you can find any good movers. Good luck on your move.

I don't have advice about movers, but maybe you can solicit Boston Redditors for some help?

They moved two bedrooms, dining room, living room, kitchen, washer/dryer, basement storage, and front hall 'library'.
I did not have them handle things like large paintings & guns/ammo, fishtank/fish mostly because I did not have a way to package or protect them, and I didn't want to pay them to do it.
They were great with antique furniture. If I had disassembled an antique bed, they moved it and asked if I wanted it assembled. Same, but opposite, with 1880's dining room set. They removed hardware, took it apart, packed/padded it, moved it, reassembled, no damage.
They always asked first. What do you want us to do with this? I LOVE that.
After moving a fuckton of book boxes, he asked, "are you a teacher?" He figured my income was clearly in that range. ;-) And who else would label book boxes by genre? poetry, philosophy, literature, math, french, spanish, train trash, crap, don't look in here, shit from living room drawers....
He was wrong, I just read a lot, but the total bill was VERY affordable, and it was 90+ degrees in August.
Their very next stop was my bank... to cash the tip check. They deserved it.
They were fast as hell & smart. (and cheaper than the competition.)
EDIT: $600 range.

Anton's Movers. Moved two people's worth of an apartment from Brookline to Arlington for around $600 total cost. Solid workers, no problems. Gentle Giant's quote was well over $1,000. We packed everything small ahead of the move and ported some of the small stuff and valuables separately, of course. Renting a car on moving day is a must, presuming you don't own wheels.
