Contact Dr. Tom Gross in Columbia SC. He is the very best! http://www.grossortho.com
Azita V. replied:
Thank you Jennifer Brechko Alphonse. I have heard a lot about Dr. Caldwell, but when I called his office, they told me his next available appointment will in almost 2 months! For now, I made an appointment with Dr. Robert Schoderbek who also works at Orthopedic Specialists of Charleston for August 9 th. But when I looked at the out of pocket costs, I realized I’m much better off to cancel it.
Azita V. replied:
Thanks Lindsey S. Morgan... I have already started my PT, but out of curosity checked the Olympic Physical Therapy, and you guys are out of network too! Wow, what a great insurace I got! Over $600/month on insurace, and seems like all the good ones are out of network!
Martin J. replied:
I don't even have a car, but I got some friends to take me to Columbia for my surgery. It is worth it to get someone as good as Dr. Gross. Go up and meet with him before you make a decision.
Emily L. replied:
you should look into coventry one - I pay $175 a month thru them and I can give you the name of the guy I got my policy thru if you're interested http://coventryone.coventryhealthcare.com/
Jennifer A. replied:
Dr. Kenneth Caldwell is in Charleston and he's great! He removed a benign tumor from my knee 20 years ago and did a meniscus repair a couple years back.
Jennifer A. replied:
Here's his website. http://www.oscharleston.com/OurTeam.aspx
Darlene M. replied:
One of my very close friends (a nurse) had a knee replacement by Dr. Waddell (Bubba) Gilmore. She likes him a lot. Here's his website. http://www.palmettoortho.com/OurTeam.aspx
Darlene M. replied:
Obviously the picture is not Dr. Gilmore. She's the PA in the practice:).
Page H. replied:
I use Dr. Heather McIntosh of Palmetto Orthopedics. She has been treating my shoulder and she understands when I would rather use an over the counter anti- inflammation rather than the hard stuff.
Lindsey M. replied:
Consider coming to Olympic Physical Therapy for your post-op rehab! ;-) (of course, you could come pre-operatively as well if your surgeon recommends it.) Good Luck!
What vet do y’all use? My dog is likely to need orthopedic surgery on her elbow. I use Patrick veterinary, but am looking for some other recommendations, esp. for a...

https://www.facebook.com/1445382725728110 Charleston Harbor Veterinarians the best! Drs. kahuda and Blackwood are kind, knowledgeable and very understanding. I am always confident in the care and recommendations they provide. I have been to other vet offices in chs and others don’t hold a candle to CHV

Oceanside Vet on Folly Road has replaced both of my dog's knees! Dr Gipe is amazing and I found them to be very reasonably priced and super helpful / supportive. I know they take Care Credit, which is essentially a credit card you can apply for that has zero percent interest for a period (usually a year) and you can make payments that way!
Jessica C. replied:
We go to Charleston Harbor Veterinarians for routine visits, but our dog needed a pretty extensive surgery so we went to Charleston Veterinary Referral Center - which we were referred to by CHV. Great experiences with both places!
Caroline B. replied:
I love the folks at Pet Vet on Shem Creek. Dr. Gordon and Dr. Brian are great and very patient.
After several hours on the phone with the Traveler's Insurance I FINALLY got an Orthopedic Surgeon to see me, but not till next Monday. AGHHH! I was in tears. Nobody is...
Brenda C. replied:
Are there any Urgent Care type clinics in your area? I've gone to them for WC and other immediate need stuff off and on for years in Portland, Seattle, and here in Hilo.
Carmen K. replied:
You won't know until you have an MRI. Your employer is required to post a list of acceptable orthopedic surgeons for their WC injuries. Check that first. No need for an attorney unless you're trying to get some jackpot from your employer. Do not go to any of those WC clinics---they are mills who just milk the system for as much as possible. If you're not happy with your choices, I believe you are allowed to choose one provider not listed on your employer's WC panel. Call the ortho office everyday to inquire about cancellations that day--you may get in sooner. Meanwhile, elevate, Motrin, and stay off of it as much as you can.
Susan W. replied:
Susie is right about the arnica. I've never taken it orally, but topically it is very effective and soothing. I will try the tablets on her advice. I use Dr Hauschka's (sp?) topical oil, from Earthfare.
Mary B. replied:
Sorry you are having so much pain. I love Charleston bone and joint. Dr. Rudolph is my Dr.,,, very good.
Fern G. replied:
Sorry to hear your discomfort Devany! Geez. Hubster had meniscus surgery here in Kona by Dr. Blum years ago and he has no complaints...it's a pretty common surgery. That's all I know tho.
Joan P. replied:
Dr. Bowles has a good reputation and Roper Hospital is terrific. You don't need a trauma center for knee surgery. Hopefully you will see him soon and feel better about things and get on the road to recovery.
Karen P. replied:
Total bummer....wonder if this is the new health care system....not sure, but I don't think, a tear gets better, although the pain might lessen, I had a gf who tore hers, and she had surgery for it. I think, the MRI, is probably critical for the diagnosis....hoping this new Dr. can get you in for that, ASAP....my clinic took WC cases, but the dr. would not operate on my shattered knee cap for 5 days, and they gave me, NO meds, I can't begin to describe the agonizing pain. Fortunately, I got to a trauma hospital the next morning, early, and they promptly started a morphine drip, and operated, by 10:30. I was never, so grateful....Trauma hospitals, MUST be staffed 24/7 for emergencies, if there is one by you....worth checking it out....they have to have open OR's, and surgeons, on duty. None of that, "calling in" when they get the big disasters, they have to be there....and if there's nothing else, going on, they will figure "well, we might as well do this one"....hope this helps.
Mary B. replied:
So sorry you are having such a time. I have had trouble with both my knees. Love Charleston bone and joint. They are Wonderful. My Dr is Dr. Rudolph.
Linda V. replied:
ACL surgery is really rough and there is a long recovery. My husband had torn a meniscus on both knees and had both repaired a few years apart. The recovery for him was very easy. He needed no pain meds afterward and started physical therapy the day after surgery. He is in very good shape I may add, which helps. I hope you did not break your knee... It looks pretty bad. We have a fabulous surgeon here in NJ. I hope you have a good one too . That is important. Feel better very soon... Stay off the leg!
Devany V. replied:
Kris, the Dr. I am going to see is Dr. Robert Bowles. I was on the phone with the insurance company when they called.
Devany V. replied:
We have urgent care centers Maria, I was in the Emergency Room at Roper Hospital on Saturday. They referred me to a doctor and I went there today, but when I did they said they did not take any Workman's Comp cases. So then I was on the phone most of the day trying to find one who would take me. I really prefer to go to MUSC, but they only take some WC cases and needed to go through a review process that takes 3 weeks to even decide if they will take you. As it turns out, they are not in the network of Traveler's who is handling the case.
Betty E. replied:
Be thankful you are not still in Hawaii with WC. Took me a year to find an orthopaedic surgeon there since the WC insurance was on the mainland. The one I did find in Hilo was a drunk (the case manager told me that) and kept missing my appointments. What a PITA that was!! I finally had to go to Honolulu to Queens Medical Centre.
Devany V. replied:
Hawaii is a different world altogether when it comes to healthcare and insurance claims. I do know that much. We had to pay lots of bills for Wes' care at Hilo Medical Center even though we had Kaiser, they kept sending us bills. One year after the over payment we FINALLY got a refund. It was absurd how slowly they worked.
Working put way through Doctor appointments, just cleared by my orthopedic surgeon for surgery on Tuesday. One more need an ok from my other doctor ...
