Hands on Charlotte is a great organization. You have to do one orientation, but they have a good mix of projects per month. It is a good way to meet people. I know some of projects try to go out for a light meal afterwords if they can (maybe not everytime but once or twice per month).
Since you mentioned incarcerated parents, give [CCT](http://centerforcommunitytransitions.org/) a look. They have three main areas of focus, and one (Families Doing Time) is helping provide resources and connections for children and families of incarcerated adults. Their other two programs can always use more volunteer help as well.

I’ve spent some time with the HYP group (Habitat Young Professionals) and they do monthly builds and a monthly social. Great group!

Ive volunteered at the CLT humane society before. At the time they were a no kill shelter, probably still are but it was aight.
