Business vehicles? We need to get a new business vehicle soon but it must be capable of towing 2.5-3 ton so a normal van is no good! I have been told but don't...
Robin C. replied:
You would need an accountant to advise on the most tax-efficient vehicle type, but you would be looking at a commercial vehicle with a large towing load. Phil Hendy should be able to advise. Then it comes down to the best deal you can get for the most suitable vehicle for your needs. Tim Beighton can help with vehicle leasing if you go down that route.
Alex R. replied:
Elizabeth you need to get specific advice regarding the tax point of the vehicle. I don't know your personal or business circumstances so unable to give specific advice relating to the all the tax viewpoints, but HMRC have a list of vehicles which you can use as basic guidance as to whether it is a commercial vehicle which is advantageous for business tax purposes: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/428510/Car_derived_Van_updateMay2015.pdf

The other thing that you will need to be sure of is drivers hours. A vehicle and trailer combination over 3.5t will possibly require that it is fitted with a tachograph and that the driver hours regulations are also followed. There are exceptions that you might find your can work under, but it's not as clear cut as buying a trailer and putting it on the back of a vehicle and off you go. And I'm sure you're well aware, but drivers who passed their car test after 1/1/1997 (IIRC) will not automatically have B+E on their licence so towing capacities will be lower for them compared to drivers who passed prior to 1997. The Gov UK website is a good starting point: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/towing-a-trailer-with-a-car-or-van/towing-a-trailer-with-a-car-or-van-the-basics I believe that the L200 has the highest tow capacity at the moment, but again happy to be proved wrong.
