Ok, can't sleep yet. I did watch Forks Over Knives recently, it was a great film. I don't think that strict of a diet would be likely to work for me because of my unique health issues. I'm pretty sure I'd have an even harder time keeping weight on with no fat in my diet. Unfortunately my health issues are not caused by lifestyle factors that changing my diet would help. Biggest issue right now is I suffered injury to my intestines and lost part of them, no changing that lol! Jennifer Merrill Edgerton I appreciate the offer but with my extensive and complex history, I think I should probably try to stick with an RD. Thank you though!! Rebecca who does your son see? That is what I am trying to avoid is a feeding tube. I came off of TPN in July and have been very slowly losing ever since. Glad to hear if I do have to do it, I'd at least hopefully be able to keep it vegan. Jennifer Feltoon Mintz that might be really good, all my doctors are at Cleveland Clinic, so they'd have my records already. We're coming from about an hour away actually so it doesn't really matter which side.
Rebecca C. replied:
If you may end up with a tube I would definitely look into the CC Wellness Institute and Dept of Functional Medicine. There is something available called Liquid Hope, that can be put in a tube or a smoothie. It's vegan, non gmo, soy, corn, and gluten free; and is amazing. The dietitians there are some of the only ones that know about it and recommend it.

First of all congrats with such an impressive weight loss! That is something to be really proud of. Respect! My impression based simply on what you said here is also that you are heavily underfueling your workouts. You have to get a way from the mindset that you're trying to lose weight by restricting calories and instead need to adapt a mindset that you are focusing primarily on being a runner and letting the last bits of weight loss happen along the way as a secondary goal. You mention your goal is to crush it at the Cleveland marathon but you're not fueling like an athlete. Remember as an athlete you are fueling ahead of your training to make sure you can start off well hydrated and with the right energy sources from the start; during training you need to fuel to replenish used calories and electrolytes to be able to maintain the effort. After the workout you need to fuel for proper recovery so you can be ready to perform well in training the following session. The good news here is that the amount of fuel you need in training (and for recovery) is less than what you will burn so you can continue to lose weight - but it's a lot more than what you are using now. Your short runs (less than an hour) you can probably do using just water (min 1 bottle per hour) but for your longer runs you should probably aim for 200 cal per hour as a starting point. But you'll have to let yourself try it for a few weeks without feeling guilty about it. Good book here is Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes (Monique Ryan).
Ginny F. replied:
Congratulations on your weight loss journey! I agree with a lot of the advice above, particularly fueling during your activities. I work for Boom Nutrition (Carb Boom! Energy Gels) and recommend a gel every 30 - 40 minutes. You must consider calories from other sources (liquid) because when you're exerting at a high heart rate over an extended period of time, your stomach can only digest about 350 calories per hour. I personally use Nuun in my water because of the low sugar and low calorie content. Boom gels contain about 110 calories per 1.4 oz and under 3 g of sugar, making it a complex-carbohydrate dense glycogen replacement fuel that's easy to digest. Boom gels will help eliminate the bonk if used on a proper fueling schedule. Boom will be the on-course energy gel at Cleveland Marathon, so if you want to train with what will be on course, CTC has a discount coupon code for 20% off. PM me for the code.
