Does anyone know of a vet near cobourg that would be open right now? Or at least pick up they're phone? TIA
Karen M. replied:
They're really close to Cobourg, but http://www.cavanhillsvet.com/ is 24 hours or there's the emergency animal clinic in Whitby which is open evenings, overnight and holidays http://www.animalemergencydurham.com/
Jodie T. replied:
Here is their website in case you need their hours www.nvpc.ca
Krista M. replied:
Pretty sure Northumberland veterinary has 24 hr but you will have to pay an after hours fee

Becky L. replied:

Kari Sprayson this is Ganaraska Vet in Port Hope? very sad
Loretta C. replied:
The Ganaraska Vet was good when Dr. Shand was there, now that there are new owners, there have been so many, many bad reviews about them. Even with myself..parking lot is never busy anymore, even if you've noticed that.. i was upset with my dog and new owners, the time i was in there, and so were a few other people in there the same day i was. So a bunch of us left. Best of luck Kevin MacDonald
Delcey D. replied:
You can still see Dr. Nancy Shand at Cavan Hill's Veterinary Clinic. It is open 24/7 and she works nights.

Brenda L. replied:
I used Dr. Shands for years before she retired and always had a good experience. I have since stayed with the clinic and found Dr. Wolters to be a very good vet. She has added a lab to the facility and they can get test results much faster than previously. When my 4 yr. old cocker spaniel contracted a fatal illness she was compassionate and very caring (let me stay in the examination room sobbing for almost an hour). Everyone's experiences are different, everyone has an opinion, bashing of any kind is not productive.
Delcey D. replied:
Dr. Shand only retired from running her own operation. You can still get a appointment with her at Cavan Hills Vet Clinic. She works midnights.
Bernice R. replied:
Well I have had Lex and Michelle as my vets for 26 yrs. I have never been to a clinic where the animals are so well looked after having animals for 50 yrs now from horses to cats and dogs. As for the comment about only in it for the money isn't that why we all go to work that is such a childish thing to say if you really knew him you would eat your words they have worked darn hard for as long as I have known them.
Delcey D. replied:
....as they should be Brenda De Lair. For everyone's info Cavan Hills has a neutering special on right now for $65.00. I just booked appointment for my 5 month old Rowdy. The receptionist advises me that Nancy Shand is available for appointments week days after midnight and does surgery on weekends. If you don't like Nancy there is other vets all outstanding in their own circles to choose from. Cavan Hills is a 24/7 clinic and does not charge extra for emergency visits. They also are wonderful community partners taking in strays, fixing and neutering them and adopting them out for free. I can't say enough good about them and the good service they provide!

Look up the Farley foundation . There are a few foundations in Ontario that offer assistance with emergency care. You will have to research the web

Ganaraska Pet clinic in port hope does payment plans I believe if not I know there are a few others
So I called Northumberland Vet and they are awesome. They took the time to talk me through everything and explain treatment options. Basically what they said is that since they are both peeing, it is unlikely they will need to be catheterized and flushed. They suggested a switch to an s/o food and to closely monitor them to make sure they don't become blocked (which I was already doing anyhow). They also said if they stop peeing or stop eating, then they need to be seen right away. So, for now, they will return to Jackson Creek for a re-examination and I will pick up the s/o food while I am there.
Lindsey G. replied:
Who's your vet? No payment plan seems awfully harsh. Call around, try Dr Lex at Northumberland Vet Services in Colborne. He's awesome! I don't understand how a uti would cost $1600 though. A simple uti would need antibiotics and a change in food it would seem

Diana B. replied:
High Street vet is the absolute cheapest and it is in Peterborough....I did my homework on this and had my male cat fixed there for $110 including his shots which I thought was very cheap!!!!!
Kim W. replied:
Yes I thought 130 was incredible seeing as females are so much more expensive. I just about fell over when the receptionist said 315.20 PLUS taxes at Dale Road lol
Kim W. replied:
Called Jackson Creek today and it is $150 plus taxes for the females

We adopted a male dog this week and he is intact. Want to get him neutered as he is roaming like nuts! Problem is he has never been to the vet or vaccinated... How do I...
Dawn H. replied:
Cavan Hills Vets are truly amazing. They really treat your animal like it was theirs. My dog had a life saving operation n kept her longer at no charge to be safe and when she finally came home they called each day to see how she was
Dakota S. replied:
I second Northumberland Veterinary Services in Colbourn. They go above and beyond for animals. Lex tells it to you straight and prices are very fair!
Sheila T. replied:
Most Vets won't help you. But the spay neuter clinic with OSPCA will. It's a bit of a travel and your on a waiting list but well worth it as they are not for profit. I paid $80 for my medium sized dog to get neutered.....that's including some vaccinations. http://www.spayneuter.ontariospca.ca/

I can't say which vet to go to, but do not go to Northumberland Vet in Colborne. I adopted a kitten over the summer from NHS and she had been spayed at Northumberland Vet. Except she wasn't spayed properly (they missed an ovary). I drove her all the way there on a Saturday and all he did was take a blood sample and tell me to come back Tuesday to drop her off. Took the day off work and drove her back on Tuesday - as soon as I get back to Cobourg I get a call saying that they didn't get the blood work back and I can either go and pick her up or leave her there for a day or two until the blood work comes in. Apparently they didn't know enough about the lab and the testing had to go to the states - my cat had to stay there for 8 days before they finally did the surgery so that they could make sure she was actually in heat (anyone looking at this cat would know she was in heat). When I finally went to pick her up, I was told to bring her back in 2 weeks to have her stitches out. When the time came, I drove that poor cat the 40 minutes back to Colborne (she HATES the car), only to be told by the vet when I showed up that her stitches were dissolvable and she didn't need to be there. Thank goodness I didn't have to pay for any of this since it was their screw up in the first place but I would definitely NOT recommend anyone taking their pet there.

**Update. *** Not a acl knee thing, fracture etc. He’s on antiflam. Meds and pain meds. He’s To go back to my vet later to see how he’s doing as this vet wants me to get his vitamin b12 levels checked. NEVER GO TO THE PET HOSPITAL OF PRINCE EDWARD. unless u want to spend a fortune and wait 2 hrs for a 1 hr X-ray results Bc they had to send it out to be looked at. And have him basically blame my dog being on raw food for his sore leg. But thank you everyone for your help. I just wish I saw the one with no emergency charge before I left. I won’t go back to this place again. But I would like to say that the vets helper lady was awesome and my dog liked her but would hide from the vet. I will keep your other vet suggestion in my phone in case I ever have to use one again.

Hope this is allowed- what is a good vet to take my 8 month kitten to just for a checkup? How much does it cost approximately? Thank you! :)

Midtown Animal Hospital on Division across from No Frills. We take both our dog and cat there. Our dog had to have surgery on this leg, and Dr. Brent called us from his home on Saturday nite to see how he was doing. Can't get more caring than that. Their rates are good as well.
