How do canyons and waterfalls sound? You might want to consider [Starved Rock State Park](http://www.starvedrockstatepark.org/) in Illinois. The waterfalls should show some sort of thaw activity, but they might be in the awkward stage between "beautiful and frozen" and "beautiful and roaring." The trails are great and well-marked, and the terrain is very different than anything you'll find in a majority of the midwest. I'm not sure how the [camping](http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/parks/i&m/east/starve/park.htm#Camping) compares to other places in the area, but I think the proximity to the canyons is worth it.
