Three Sisters Wilderness is gorgeous. We did most of the full loop, went over the saddle and to Broken Top a couple years ago. It gets crowded around Green Lakes, Moraine Lake and the South Sister summit trail. We didn't see much of anyone past about 6 or so miles in on the loop. The only place you need a special permit for is the Obsidian area but its a very small area and you can go around it.

Toll Bridge Campground at the base of Mt. Hood. Close to Lost Lake, Lawrence Lake and Lookout Mt. is a great night hike. Don't even need reservations most of the time!

That's what it looks like. When I was little there were some tiny little motel like cabins about where Gardner Enterprises is now. It seems like Ruth Harris's family lived there for awhile. Maybe she would know.
Betty E. replied:
Shaun, Dean & some others were just talking about him staying there when he was 13 yrs. old. They came over from Springfield to go deer hunting. Later it was known as Hays Auto Court and he delivered stove oil after 1963 after he bought Union Oil dist. from Lou Steelman. He says it was definitely whee Gardner Ent. is now.

Salmon River by Mt Hood may be a good hike. If you drive all the way in till you get to the bridge crossing the river. you can park there and hike in heading east along the river. some good camping spots right along the river.

Russian Wilderness, Whiskeytown Wilderness, and Castle Crags are in the same area. I guarantee this is the best, secluded and snow-free area within 7 hours drive of Portland.
