I have a consultation with a tattoo artist tomorrow. I'm a wee bit apprehensive after my last experience. Any suggestions on things to ask him about?

Ask to see their license: "In order to receive a license as a tattooer, limited term tattooer, permanent cosmetic tattooer, or master permanent cosmetic tattooer in compliance with § 54.1-703 of the Code of Virginia" http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/.../A425REGS_Tattooing.pdf

Ahhh okay.. Looks like there are just some minor laws to abide by, but nothing regulated -- https://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe...

Marlowe Ink is a great shop. I don't know if I know Danny though.
Rachel W. replied:
Marlowe Ink is great. I had my work done there with Chiron, who specializes in ritual tattoo. (She has since moved to Cirque Du Rouge in DC. Which is another great shop.)

Full sleeve eh? You either need to play in a metal band or be a part of a motorcycle gang. All jokes aside, I found this [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/nova/comments/7 yb3 s4/looking_for_a_good_piecingtattoo_parlor/) that was submitted not too long ago.

I recommend not getting tattoos.

Best tattoo advice? Don't get any. They are at best cliche and at worst something that you regret because it looks stupid. Nobody at age 60 ever says "boy, I'm glad I got a tattoo"

I've gotten all but two of mine at Marlowe, and all of my piercings there, and over the ten+ years the marlowe ones have held up the best. I don't think any of the artists I'd seen are still there, but I like the shop and I think you'd have a good experience overall. Side note, I'd avoid Rick's in Arlington. I got a huge rib piece in Jan 2016 that covered up a smaller, shitty tat, and as of last summer I could already see the covered up tat showing through. Originally, I was thrilled with the work but I already have to get it touched up, which is lame.

There’s a tattoo convention coming to Crystal City June 1 st-3 rd. I usually get most of my ink done at conventions, ton of great artists to choose from!

For something as significant as major tattoo work, I wouldn't be so confining in geography. I commented on the other thread, but most of my work(including a completed full sleeve and another in progress, and about twenty other large projects) have been done by James Haun at Fatty's Tattoos in Dupont Circle. You're gonna live with it for the rest of your life. It's worth a commute, even if you go often. I went weekly for 18 months at one point.

Best guy in the area for large pieces, imo, is Mike Sykes. Can be tough to get on his books though. [eyespeak](http://www.eyespeak.us/) [and instagram](https://www.instagram.com/eyespeaktattoo/)

I recommend finding an artist that specializes in the type of artwork you want. Instagram is a great resource for exploring different types of styles and finding an artist that can pull it off well. IMO the best and closest artists will in NYC.

I had House Calls on the Hill pierce my 8 yo's ears. The NP used a kit that included a little disposable spring-loaded contraption that pierced her ears virtually painlessly. I'd been planning to take her to Claire's, but changed my mind when I heard a slew of stories about kids getting infections there. I'd recommend going the doctor's piercing route to anyone.

My opinion is that a professional piercer typically working out of a tattoo shop is the most qualified to do this. Please see article! http://time.com/.../why-i-took-my-7-year-old-to-a-tattoo.../
