I can not recommend anyone higher for a trip to Italy than Lee at http://www.bellaitaliabylee.com/. He and his wife have been there about 30 times, know the ins and outs, the right lanes to drive in, the right lines to wait in, the right places to go and the way to maximize your time. Just tell him what you want to do. I really would never have been able to make my first trip to the country of my grandfathers as much as a benefit without him and would not have been able to enjoy myself on subsequent trips without the solid foundation he built. You owe it to yourself to check him out. Please give him my regards.

I'm sure people above have recommended Rick Steves travel books- so I'll just second him (them)! We've toured on our own all over the world and I wish he wrote books outside of Europe. Grab his city specific books rather than the general 'Italy' book as his city books have more walking tours which are fantastic. He's got GREAT itinerary suggestions and his background and information are well informed and interesting. His travel books are actually fun reads rather than just a list of where to stay or eat. Can't recommend him enough. You can also look for his specials on PBS where he films short travel episodes to certain areas of Europe.

Rick Steve's books are really great for Europe itineraries.

The only tours you really need to do is one of the coliseum/ palatine hill and the Vatican. You can book directly with Vatican for tours by their own employees. Its excellent and the best price. For the coliseum we used anno Domini tours which was well worth the price. Very small tour so we could ask a lot of questions and learned a lot more about what we were seeing. The tour guide was a roman history teacher and she knew her stuff. I shared link to the tour company. Rome is a walking city and most sites and churches are open to public with no charge so we only did those two are arranged tours. So much to see for free! http://www.anno-domini.us/index.htm

Angel Tours Rome has wonderful tour guides for the Vatican, all art or history students studying for advanced degrees. We spent a second day with them.
