Not that much between the Airport and the pier, as they are so close to each other, basically a highway and a big oil/ gas storage area at the pier.
Your best bet is to review this [tread] (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=38171598&page=12) on cruise critic. It lists Priceline and Hotwire hotels that have been obtained over the past couple of years.
$150 for FFL is not that expensive, and when you get into the sub $100 price range, you are starting to look at some interesting places. Prices are cheaper in the summer and fall, and then hit the roof when winter season starts.
Try to find a place that will offer free transport to Port Everglades, most places will have a bus taking passengers to the port.
Personally, I stay at a larger hotel chain (Marriott) as I like access to the beaches and the strip. Yes it costs more, but I feel more secure. I currently have a $200 room for 2 nights in Feb of next year, at the Courtyard on Seabreeze, more expensive than you want, but it is in a great location right on the beach.

I've stayed at the Candlewood Suites off of SR 84. Next time I am staying at the [Hyatt Place Airport/Cruiseport](http://fortlauderdaleairportsouth.place.hyatt.com/en/hotel/home.html). It's probably about 6 miles from the port, but I really don't need to be right next to the port. But I will say there is something about waking up and looking out your hotel window to see the ships all in port. We were also looking at the [Quality Inn & Suites](http://qualityinnandsuitesftlauderdale.com/), but we got a decent enough rate to the Hyatt Place, so that's why we chose it. But for just one night, we could probably deal with pretty much anything.

Anthony's On The Beach, small motel on the beach. Very clean place and reasonably priced. They only have about 12 rooms.

Jetty Park is nice and free if you have an extra day.

I just left out of that part yesterday (am onboard the Conquest right now). We did stayed at the Fairfield Inn in Dania Beach on Griffin Road for $153 including the shuttle to and from the port. Really nice room, but the hotel is undergoing renovations.
Does anyone know where I can find a high resolution copy of the Traffic 'wheel of life' logo? I have only ever found a low res one through a Google image search.

The courtyard is very close to the event location. Depending on your taste, there are many nice hotels right on the ocean on the same strip that event is at. Sonesta is a nice boutique hotel. Here is link for the Courtyard: http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/fllco-courtyard-fort-lauderdale-beach/
