Jessica B. replied:
Yay that he is being put on Elecare or Neocate! That is within the guidelines for under 2-'s who can't have moo milk, though I'm curious why soy wasn't an option. Generally WIC is more likely to offer it because it's cheaper. But for tips, check out the forums at www.community.kidswithfoodallergies.org. There are lots of parents with lots of experience to help you out! :)
Melanie C. replied:
Sorry your son was diagnosed with food allergies. KFA can help! *some* milk allergic children can tolerate soy milk & formulas. It may be worth a trial to see if you son can tolerate soy. Be sure and look at the KFA website. There are a lot of great resources that can help. KFA's Starter Guide is a great place to start. http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org/guide_to_parenting_child_with_food_allergy.html Be sure and sign up for a free KFA membership. My son was diagnosed with the same allergies (plus sweet potato and carrot) at 10 months of age. Ener G egg replacer was a big help with baked goods. He drank alimentum formula until he was 22 months old. Rhodes frozen bread dough is good for bread and pizza crust. Cherry Brooke Kitchen is a good company for baked goods. Try a rice pasta, you might get away from the egg warnings with those. Jovial rice pasta doesn't have any facility warnings as far as i remember. Sunbutter sunflower seed spread is an excellent replacement for peanut butter! good luck!

What about asking on the KFA board at http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org? There are several VA and DC folks on there. As far as formula, what about a soy based one like Bright Beginnings.
Melanie C. replied:
Ditto Elyse. Also look at E028 juice type boxes.
Brooke S. replied:
I would strongly, strongly recommend avoiding soy formula. Research has showed that it may actually be leading to an increase in allergies, including those to peanuts and to asthma. For more info, check out The Unhealthy Truth by Robyn O'Brien. Some stunning studies on this have come out of Britain.
Meg F. replied:

Where in MN are you? That could make a difference. (For example, I am actually in NJ, but SOUTH, so we go to DE & MD - there are great NYC docs but impractical for where I am in the state.) we've given our kids the extra EpiPen "trainers" and showed them how to use them correctly; our kids love to play "allergic reaction" with their dolls & stuffed animals and role play the whole process of using the EpiPen, counting to 10, then pretending to call 911 we require that the EpiPen trainers only get used *correctly* and not pretend they are some other sort of toy National Jewish has a couple of videos - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjXchhqXF98&playnext=1&list=PLA2E3B6716B4382DB&feature=results_main
