Use Psychology Today to help you find a good fit for you. There are filters you can use as well as viewing profiles of each person. It is a really personal choice and what works for one person might be a nightmare for another.

[616 counseling](https://www.616 counseling.com/) This is a hard city to find therapy that isn't faith-based/has religious overtones, but 616 Counseling has a solid staff - David isn't overtly religious, neither is Shawn.

I went to Melissa Tower to deal with anxiety, I found that she genuinely listened and I am very apprehensive about going to therapy and I would go to her again if I needed help. [A Link to the Past.](http://counselinginthepines.com/melissa-tower/)

There are support groups that meet Wednesday afternoons/evenings at the [Anxiety Resource Center (ARC)](http://anxietyresourcecenter.org/), which is in an old firehouse building near Founder's. It's free. Might be a good option to also ask about therapists. I don't suffer from social anxiety, but there are plenty of people in the groups that do. I know they also offer individualized services. Not sure about cost.

OP, recommendations are cool and all, but I'd argue that it's more important to figure out which providers accept your insurance. Then you can ask for suggestions from your pool of verified participating providers. If you are not using insurance; carry on.

I just wanted to say thanks for the advice so far. I have good insurance and I’m going to have someone call theses places to see if they take my insurance. I’m also going to look at the anxiety resource center. That sounds amazing. Now hopefully I can get myself to actually do it.

The Well Being Center - Front Street NW, Grand Rapids Michigan. Any of their therapists are great. I'm a huge advocate for NOT going to a normal therapy clinic (Pine Rest etc.) due to the doctors/ therapists always pushing medicine as a cure all. I've been diagnosed with mild general anxiety disorder, and took medication for the next 8 years based on doc's recommendation. Long story short- we are having a tough time coming off the medicine that I was so dependent on. Anxiety is worse now, The answer to my anxiety issues was CBT techniques. (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) Really its all about creating the best environment first & the rest will follow. I nkow it's the cliche line of " be active, eat healthy" but there is science to prove the correlation between anxiety/depression and activity levels. Anywho, my experience has taught me that medicine based mental therapy is for grievous situations. Avoid if at all possible. Find someone with a holistic approach & dive deep in yourself. It'll be quite a journey but I think you will find empowerment out of fixing/helping the anxiety. best of luck to you:)

Therapists are like wine. One I enjoy may taste like vinegar to you. One you can afford may seem prohibitively expensive to me. Best bet: try a few out and when you find the right one, you will know.

Counseling in the Pines is where my therapist is and it's a shared office space with other practicioners that just happen to mostly be women. I'd suggest she check out their website where each one has a short little bio and see if anyone sounds good at first glance and then set up that first session. Of course, it can take a few tries to find someone compatible but it's a starting point. Most of the professionals there accept insurance or work on a sliding scale if paying out of pocket. http://counselinginthepines.com/

I agree with all the above. You could also look into The Sensory Learning Center in Allendale. It's advertised on WJQ 99.3 It was immensely helpful for Ryan when we had him do it a number of years ago. We're having him take a refresher in it in December. It's not for everyone but they give you a free session to check it out.
