I have been sitting on the idea of starting my own small flock for a few years now and am wondering if there is anywhere I can go for a beginner's class on raising...

The Greensboro Children's Museum is having a coop tour soon. It is a great way to see what others are doing and ask lots of questions.

We were thinking about getting chickens, spent a day over Spring Break with a teacher I worked with that had chickens (about 80), but before we had a coop some of my daughter's friends decided chicks did not make good pets for the bedroom. We took in 4 chicks (one became a Roo and is servicing 24 girls on a farm in Troy!) that were just starting to feather out. We kept them in a rabbit cage until they got bigger then allowed them to free range in the back yard. We brought them in each night and they slept on the washer on top of an old bed pad. It was a good set up for us, and worked since chickens do not move in the dark! They would line up on the back railing when it was time to go to bed, and we brought them in. This worked for almost two years then the hawk killed one, traumatized the other two, came back a month later and killed again. Such a waste since he could not carry my big Rhode Island Reds away. Eleanor on this page gave us a beauty to keep our loan survivor company. Chicken math hit so I finally built a coop out of recycled materials with the intention of getting more birds. Kernersville Feed & Seed sells sexed chicks for a bit more than straight run, but will take back any that become Roos. They also sell pullets (laying age) across the street if you do not want to wait on eggs. Like others have said, this sight is a great resource for questions and answers, so ask away & good luck!!

Roosters do their best to make sure the girls are protected. They are NOT a predator defense, just a deterrent. They do try to protect and make sure all the girls are safe. We got a rooster from Ellanor Farllow for free after the coyotes got ours. He has taken over and watches to make sure all of his ladies are across the road, like a crossing guard! Lol. A rooster is a great addition to the flock. Some are just as easy to handle as hens. If they are brought up being handled. Chickens are EASY to raise and a pleasure to enjoy!
Stephen S. replied:
Not sure where you live, Alison, but roosters are not permitted in the city limits by ordinance. Also, I know you said no books, but Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow was a big help to me when I had my flock. I will have another when my circumstances permit. Chickens are way fun, really easy to raise and care for, and the freshly laid eggs are delicious!!!
Stephen S. replied:
Alison, it's pretty much a soup to nuts book covering raising chicks, different breeds, housing, diseases, all kinds of stuff. And it usually can be found at Barnes & Noble or online at Amazon.com. Or you can borrow my copy! (I live in Sunset Hills).

Davis Feed in Randleman will usually hold a chicks day as well...with beginners classes as well! But like Jason Weaver said we are more than happy share any info or advice and let you see our chickens!
