Question from a reader: Can anyone recommend a good, caring veterinarian not too far from the Pelham Road/Five Forks area?
Cheryl H. replied:
Rocky Creek Veterinary Hospital and Pet Resort on Hwy14 is great!
Pamela S. replied:
Holly Tree Animal Hospital (Dr. Shrum) on Highway 14 is awesome, but they are a but pricey. I've also heard really good things about the veterinarians in the Publix shopping center at Thornblade.
Sandy M. replied:
Roper Mtn Animal Hospital is great!
Kathy H. replied:
Roper Mt. Animal Hospital off Roper Mt. Road exit. I'm good friends with the main vet there, Dr. Heather Gleaton, and wouldn't think of using anyone else for our animals.
Michelle M. replied:
Milestone Veterinary Associates on the Parkway! We love to use Robyn Gallucci as our Vet. She attends our church:)
Allison W. replied:
Roper Mtn Animal Hospital is top quality and loving care
Tammy B. replied:
Woodruff Rd Animal Hospital.
Lynn H. replied:
We are extremely grateful to Cleveland Park East Animal Hospital on Main Street of Simpsonville for agreeing to treat our less-than-common pet and doing so with incredible compassion and professionalism. I highly recommend them to anyone.
Does anyone know of a local vet willing to neuter this little guy? I know Dr. Bell can vaccinate him.
Angel D. replied:
We use Dr Robert Tope at Electric City Animal Clinic in Anderson. He can neuter and vaccinate. BUT...are you prepared for an adult Raccoon that cannot be released? He's still young and can be raised with other raccoons and taught to be releasable by an experienced wildlife rehabber. Raccoons do not make good pets, they are still wild animals no matter how you raise them. Do your research and realize that if you decide to keep him, he's a 15 year commitment that could very well become unpredictable and aggressive as he gets older. He will not be able to have free range of your house because they do not understand NO and will do what they want on their own terms. So all your cabinets will be opened and counters and tables cleared while they knock things off just to see them hit the floor. They climb your walls, tear down your blinds and dig holes in your mattress and couch. They have serious canine teeth and claws and just their playing with you will leave you with scars, not to mention what will happen if he gets mad at you. You also have a liability if he ever bites anyone that comes to your home. It does not matter if he's been vaccinated, DHEC will have him put to sleep and tested for rabies. Imprinted raccoons are also pretty serious about their people and who they like and don't like. Some things to consider, who will watch him while you go out of town for work or vacation? Will you have a raccoon proof room in your house or outside caging? Outside caging is expensive. Raccoons are smart and can open doors and figure out many locks. They need enrichment to keep them from getting bored. As you're finding out now, its also hard to find a vet that will see them. You'll be paying "exotic" pet prices, plus raccoons need feline, canine and rabies vaccines yearly, monthly heartworm and flea treatment as well as a regular worming because raccoons can carry Raccoon roundworm which is deadly to humans. If it sounds like I'm trying to talk you out of keeping him, its because I've had 8 "owner surrendered" pet raccoons come to Izzie's Pond in the last year and a half because people didn't know how hard having a wild animal can be. The older the animal is, the harder it is for them to adjust. Regardless what you decide, call Dr Tope for an appointment asap to get a fecal and start boosters. He's an amazing vet and one of the few that is experienced in wildlife. If I can help you, to offer advice, or anything, feel free to call me --8643036171 And thank you for saving that baby, he certainly is precious.

Please delete if not allowed.. We adopted a dog who has HW's & our vet quoted us around $1,300 for the total cost of the treatment.. I was looking for some input on what...
Taryn G. replied:
Who did you adopt the dog from, and yes $1300 is more than excessive. Contact Dr Kim Sanders at Pleasantburg Vet Clinic in Greenville. It should be more like $300.
Lisa D. replied:
I use Westside Veterinary and had a dog I found that was heartworm positive when we found him. It was around $400 to treat him.
Walker M. replied:
Call Ark Animal Hospital in Boiling Springs. They are cheaper on EVERYTHING.
