Did anyone ever go to the Pediatric Dentist in Orinda- Dr. William Bernard?
Jennifer H. replied:
I went to Dr. Bernard and Dr. Chiappone. Their offices were right across the hall from one another in the Orinda Medical Building.
Anne S. replied:
I went to Dr. Jensen and Dr. Crutcher in Lafayette.
Laura P. replied:
Never went to Dr. Chiappone but all my friends that did called him "phony Chiappone" because it seems he would put braces on u for a looooong time, take them off, then put them back on for additional time along with all the head gear! I had a Dr. In Oakland. Braces on for a year and a half. No head gear, done
Suzanne M. replied:
Dr. Moss wwas my dds
Faye F. replied:
Our family went to Dr. Bernard... mostly just remember the Highlights magazines though.
Wendy H. replied:
Went to Bernard once - horrible experience. Switched to Dr Maas. He was awesome. Assume he's long since retired?
Margo E. replied:
When I was little I moved once during an x-ray, and Dr. Bernard hit me. I was terrified of going after that until I finally told my mother a few years later and she immediately moved me to the amazing Dr. Kahl.
Karen P. replied:
I love Dr. Kahl (& the whole crew there, most of whom are Miramonte grads). I dread the day he decides to retire!
Karen V. replied:
Pete Giers.....Geirs. (sp). Was the best! My family all went to him!
Karen Z. replied:
Fascinating comments. I, thankfully, did not meet this guy; my Dentist was in Berkeley and then the lovely Dr. Kahl after that. I have an Orinda friend (who is not a FB participant) who told me about Dr.B. she thought all the abuse was just inflicted on her on her brothers- clearly not! This guy would have been sued and/or arrested today. Should have been back then!
Patrick F. replied:
Good ortho and Dr. Dierke's main competition in the 1970's...
Suzanne D. replied:
I loved Dr. Bernard. He was always very gentle and I've never been scared of the DDS because of him. I remember the wallpaper border of ice cream cones, the great treasure chest you were allowed to choose something from, the headphones you could wear to watch TV while he was drilling and the vile rubberish grey dental dam he'd cover your teeth with. Bubble gum tooth polish and Highlights magazine. I've always been very thankful for him. I'm quite shocked to read these other posts!
Heidi C. replied:
No fond memories of Dr. Bernard, only fear...he had NO patience for squirmy kids (my brother) or anxious kids (me). I do remember those crazy pointed cowboy boots he wore! We later changed to Dr. Giers and I wasn't afraid anymore. Dr. Connors was another great orthodontist in Orinda/Moraga.
Laura P. replied:
Ahhh... Dr. William Wilbur. Favorite dentist of all time. Sad when he retired just a few years ago. Always gave me a break financially as I got older and didn't have insurance. I STILL have fillings done by him from probably 35+ years ago that are still intact! He dated my mom for a bit so I had some dirt on him too! Hehehee! They moved their office to the village side and I still go there to this day
Kate G. replied:
I recently unearthed receipts from my childhood dentist (Dr.Arthur Jensen in Berkeley who partnered for awhile with a Dr. Jerry Jensen) Six dollars for a child's regular cleaning in 1966.
David G. replied:
Agreed, he was a Bastard, while working on my teeth one time, a chip flew off in to my eye, I told him and he told me to quit moaning and just kept working, I switched to Dr Wilber down the hall after that day.
Kevin C. replied:
Dr William Smith in Lafayette for me
Karen P. replied:
I saw Dr. Bernard, but (thankfully?) don't really remember much about him. I switched to Dr. Kahl when I was 10 or so, and still see him 35 years later!
Judi M. replied:
How about Dr. Chiappone, ortho in Moraga?
Matthew D. replied:
I think Dr. Jerry was Dr. Arthur's son.
Betsey M. replied:
Oh yes, the Dear Dr. Bernard--I remember him as being an ass to my siblings! Although he did come to his office late one night to patch me up when I had knocked all my baby teeth out in a bike accident. But as I recall, he was still an ass! I did like the treasure chest though. And I spent my formative years with Dr. Chiappone back when he was in Orinda (and in Moraga when he seemed to hit the "big-time"). Do you remember his bright yellow Panteras? I remember my parents used to joke they bought them for him!
