Still being a newbie, I want to ask what are the "must see" places and/or great restaurants in the area? Do you head into Cary and Raleigh or are there gems here I need...
Mary G. replied:
Raleigh has great (free!) museums and many restaurants. Try Gravy for Italian, 18 Seaboard for updated Southern, at North Hills: Cocquette Brasserie. More casual, family places: the Pit in downtown Raleigh; Char Grill is a classic. There's one in Cary near The Fresh Market, Burger Fi is awesome and has 2 locations: Raleigh and Cary. In Fuquay, try The Aviator Smokehouse. Kid friendly. Try the house made root beer. In Cary try TriBeCa Tavern. For Thai food, Thai phoon in Raleigh. Also, 518 for Italian. We bring our kids there. It's in the Glenwood South area. I also highly recommend Little Hen. Bass Lake Draft house is close and pretty good family place. Sorry this is a lot! I have more, just gave highlights.

There are plenty of great parks in the area including Jordan Lake and Harris Lake. Farmers Market Restaurant for southern food, Pie Birds for everything baked in a pie!, Abbey Road Tavern in Cary is a dive but awesome burgers! It's beetles themed. Rare date night- Rays Restaurant in Cary. Pricey but worth it. Downtown Apex is adorable.

You'll def have to check out Marbles Museum downtown for the kids. The history museum is also great. Bass Lake (across the street from the Salem Ridge exit) is great too. The kids can fish, you can rent a little 1 horsepower trawling motor that tuts round the lake, the 1 mile trail around the lake is fun for a nature walk. Btw, my kids are about the same age and we're over off of Kinderston. If you are around here, maybe we can get the kiddie's together!
Melissa J. replied:
With our boys we like Carolina Ale House in Cary (Crossroads), My Way Tavern, Daniels in Fuquay (also located in Apex), Danny's BBQ in Cary. For date nights we like Little Hen, Chef's Palette, Sullivan's.

Thai Thai north of downtown HS on Main St. is good. Sushi Iwa in Apex at Beaver Creek Commons is outstanding.

I just did this last weekend and many times. Very fun, very easy, for a "novice" cyclist or recreational cyclist. Sun dog is a rental company and creeper rentals. You can rent bikes, but best to take your own helmet (some may not fit and may be limited availability) For an easier ride, start from WhiteTop to Damascus. (It's "downhill", don't let downhill scare you, one friend thought it was a steep slope when I said that)Downhill meaning a gradual grade. At mile 11, stop at the Creeper Cafe for a chocolate cake and/or cheeseburger/hotdog, BLT

I've posted at All Star Bike Shop in Cary, Cycle Surgeon, Cycling Spoken Here, Inside Out Sports, Performance in Cary, REI in Cary, and The Bicycle Chain in Apex. In addition, I tried Dicks Sporting Goods in Cary without success (no community events board to which I could contribute). I succeeded at Dicks in Apex. Restaurants: Anna's Pizza Apex and Brew & Cue Apex are both done, as is Moe's in Apex. Last but not least: BruePrint in Apex (where I twisted the arms of some of their run club members), and Southern Peak in Apex.
Daniel L. replied:
Highest on the to-do list: CBC Taproom (was closed when I tried). After that, any bike shops or slightly-higher-than-department-store bike retailers. Then breweries / taprooms / restaurants. I also tried Harris Teeter in Apex; they have no such board and disallow posting.
I really need someone to open franchises of Jamba Juice and Cafe Rio in Holly Springs. They would be swarmed on a daily basis... Seriously!
April S. replied:
Rachel I absolutely agree! Cafe Rio has been opening stores like crazy in VA and MD, they just need to come down a little farther south.
Rachel W. replied:
April Sallada, if I had the $ and experience, I'd open one of each myself! I email Cafe Rio regularly, begging for them to open one here. I even looked into franchising online, I'm about $300-600 k short for opening each Holly Springs Towne Centre would be the perfect spot for both.
