Any tips please for toughening a horses feet in the process of going barefoot? Took my boys hinds off a couple of years ago at vet/farriers...
Beth M. replied:
I found it was a combination of exercise and good diet. This book by Nic Barker was an incredibly helpful resource: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Feet-First-Barefoot-Performance-Rehabilitation/dp/0851319602 and follow her updates at Rockley Farm here on Facebook. All this soft ground right now won't be helping. One thing I did in the first few weeks was walk my horse daily over pea gravel. That worked really well. But it really is a combination of things you need to consider. Also consider using boots for now on hacks so he's not sore.
Claire M. replied:
I had similar issues with my mare.. she'd been without back shoes for years but struggled when fronts were removed. Best advice I can give is to seek some professional advice from an equine podiatrist (highly recommend Natalie Kitchener). Even if you choose not to use them to trim they will still be able to advise on diet/nutrition, management, exercise and therapeutic use of hoof boots to help.
Debbie L. replied:
My horses are barefoot and I'd never consider shoes. Try hoof boots while you transition and lots of conditioning over different surfaces. It might be difficult at the moment because everything is soft and boggy because of the weather. If you can hand walk on the road for 10-15 minutes daily or ride on the beach, do things like that and gradually increase it. For better info I recommend www.equinepodiatry.co.uk

Rebecca H. replied:
If you go to www.check-a-chip.co.uk and type in the microchip number you can find out which database to contact. That said, the microchip database is separate from the passport issuing office so whilst they may be able to assist you with changing the microchip into your name or letting you know if the horse has been reported as stolen/missing, they may not have any idea which passport office can issue you with a replacement passport. You may find you just have to get a new passport done. Hope that helps :)
Rebecca H. replied:
Oh and PetID are a microchip supplier not a database where the chips are registered so they will most likely direct you to call Petlog as that's the company that register PetID chips. Petlogs number us 0844 4633999 :)
