Screw the big chain stores, !attresses have something like a 400% markup. Texas mattress makers does almost all of the manufacturing for the retail stores, just go to them and buy direct.

I've been checking out "the avocado" online. You can get it delivered and set up for $99 and there's a coupon right now. It has great reviews.

My friend has the version sleepys used to sell and she is a large girl and has had it for about 5 years.

Throw a rock in any direction. Go to the first mattress place it inevitably hits. In all seriousness though, I bought a Leesa online since they also had a pretty nice discount code.

How about buying one online? We have a [Tuft & Needle mattress](https://www.tuftandneedle.com/mattress/shop/?size=tn23 k) that's firm, good quality, and was affordable with a 100-day trial/return policy and 10-year warranty. I had the same issue with back aches from a soft mattress and it's so much better now.

Firm mattress = Mattress Firm, nuff said.
hazelowl replied:
Ours is from Mattress Firm, it has softened up nicely now though. Some of the foam ones you can get online will be firmer though. We seriously considered Helix online. Also Tuft & Needle. Also considered ordering from Texas Mattress Makers.

Gallery Furniture. Their owner is kind of a badass.
CrispyBrisket replied:
I buy mine online. I've done 2 from Sealy that were fabulous - like every guest that stays in our guest room asks me what kind of mattress it is and we think it's the less comfortable of the two. You dnot need to go to a store. If you want firm (we love our firm ones) just get online and find the firm ones that are on sale. If there aren't wait a few weeks and look again. Seems like most sales are over the summer but I always get mine on clearance.
Does anyone know where I can dump a mattress in West Houston? Anywhere close to beltway.
yzlautum replied:
Anywhere in the middle of the freeway is usually where most people dump them.
Akeem_Olajuwon replied:
There is a dump at the Beltway and 59, Southwest Neighborhood Depository. Just make sure to bring either a copy of a water or electric/gas bill. They just want to make sure you are a Houston resident. Before you go, look online for days and times. You get 4 dumps a month fyi.
Put it in the back of your truck, drive down 59... The problem sort of takes care of itself. /note, I did NOT say tie it down.
FoodieTomjanovich replied:
the 610 underpass between 45 south and Woodbridge is a popular spot for discarded mattresses

Don't dump it! Recycle it at the [Houston Furniture Bank](http://houstonfurniturebank.org/programs-and-services/mattress-recycling/).

Just dump it on the side of the road in Alief. No one will notice.

Find the nearest mattress store and dump it on their doorstep (or behind their building) after hours. :)

Here are the keys to buying a mattress: * Never pay full price. Wait until there is a sale. * Stick to a name brand place, either a chain store or even Sears. * Wait until a major or minor holiday and things will be on sale to a greater or lesser extent. * Most stores have a predetermined schedule of sales and can probably tell you in advance when what you want will be on sale, and for how much.

Consumer Reports says some of the mattresses costing less than $1000 are BETTER than the more expensive ones. Can anyone recommend a good (we prefer soft, not firm)...
Jill R. replied:
One thing CR said was to buy a cheap box spring because they are all the same and then you can buy a better mattress to top it. Mattress Firm looks cheap on their mattresses, but then they sell the box spring separate, so maybe thats the way to go. Everyone else seems to sell as a set.
