Stitches to Go, by Howren and Robertson ( last names), is good, and The Needlepoint Book by Jo Christensen

The TNNA book that Pat Mazu mentioned is also good. And look online at www.stitchguild.com.

For a total beginner, I'd recommend a book that you get get easily on Amazon and that has all of the basics like canvas prep and types of threads/wools. DK's Stitch Sampler is a good all around starting book.
Diane P. replied:
The Needlepoint Book. You can find it on Amazon

Also out of print, but very useful for beginners is The Joy of Needlepoint by Diane Wachman. Don't pay $50 for these but watch for them. Try www.abebooks.com.
