I sell welders and supplies for a living plus I weld as a hobby so here is some advice. Stay away from welders sold at Home Depot/Lowes. The Lincoln welders that they sell are NOT the same as the ones sold by a welding supply store. The drive mechanism and boards are junk. Second, an awesome hobbyist welder is the Hobart Handler. Hobart at one time was the leader in home mig welders. Hobart is owned by Miller which is the leader in the industry. The "guts" in a Hobart Handler are all Miller parts, which is a good thing. These are great welders for the money. I use a Hobart, used it for 10 years now with no issues. love my baby Lincoln.. MIG Pak 15. 220V w gas handles all light work less than 3/8" very well.
