all I know is ever since the "new" health care laws set forth by Obama Care.... my BCBS of AL will no longer pay for my autistic daughter's meds anymore..... so, alas she is no longer on meds because we can't afford them and we (my husband and I ) "make" too much money to get any help...... life is sooooo hard....

We refer lots of people to Madison Behavioral for ABA. They are BC/BS and Tricare and even if insurance doesn't cover it they really try and work with families to develop a plan that they can work with. They also hold workshops sometimes. The workshops aren't cheap but it's like a full day of ABA training for the parent to implement at home.

Madison Behavior Therapy also does weekly social skills classes at KidVenture, and they do offer some scholarships. They are fantastic.

I would think Dr Porter would be a good one for that.

John Morelock ...non of my current xrays show arthritis, but I know I have a family history of it....so, maybe need to look into that a little further. I am 38, so I don't like to consider myself old, but I am not a young spring chicken anymore either: -). I have only been running for 5 years, but was a dancer for 10 years in my youth, so my body has been pounded on a lot. The pain I am experiencing currently is a stabbing pain (to the outside of the knee) to intense to walk through much less run through....I would welcome a dull ache at this point!! LOL! Again, thanks for all your advice, you are giving me lots to think about. I don't want to give up yet, but am slowly feeling the "defeat" beginning to creep in.....

Jessica Urban Chitwood , it stinks you have had to do so much work without relief. I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy with an eclectic experience. I use the most current research as well as reevaluate 'ancient' techniques for modern use. I like to approa ch issues holistically. Challenges are exciting to figure out but I won't make false promises things will be fixed. To start off I have three questions. 1 do you do much sitting or driving? 2 are you able to do single leg squats as fast as you can equally on both legs without losing control? 3 when standing do you tend to rest with your weight mainly on the painful leg/hip? I just started through Wellstone. My insurance covers their 'private practice' counselors and I'm working with Marion who seems pretty good.

I can't help with local non-VA therapists, sorry, but I do have a close friend who is a social worker with the VA and can see if I can reach out to her if you'd like. I've been seeing a therapist at the VA here for a while and have never had to wait longer than a couple weeks. In fact when I first sought help, I was able to walk in and ask to see one. www.psychologytoday.com has a search engine that can search for PTSD, therapists that can take your insurance, practices close to you, etc.

I’ve recently moved from Huntsville, but I used to be a therapist in Huntsville at Alabama Psychological Services Center and I know a number of counselors there that are secular and work with PTSD. My sister, Christina Pannell LCSW, is also a therapist there, is secular, and has worked with PTSD issues.

Madison county vet center. Its specifically for vets with PTSD and MST. The counselors are amazing

Call Integrated Behavioral Health, in Madison. 855 422 1618. Very good people there, no psychologist tho, Psychiatrists, social workers and therapists.

I drive all the way to muscle shoals to ibh for that reason.

I've found that if you look for pro-LGBT therapists, their chances of being a Christian counselor go way down. I used a therapist in the past who did not talk about religion in our sessions, but I knew he was a Christian. He wasn't nearly as beneficial for my particular needs as my current non-religious therapist.

Wellstone and wellspring aren’t affiliated with any particular religion. In fact, one of their branches (the NOVA center) actually works in the local public schools. However, they do take into account whether you want your religious beliefs (or lack thereof) to be a part of your counseling.

Kelly Fischer is great with PTSD and she does not push religion on clients. She is on Clinton Ave downtown. If you want more info just let me know.

"Isn't going to go biblical on us" y'all sound like my future bffs.

Check out Lisa Philippart with Healing Arts Center. She does a lot of work with vets and is secular. If she can’t help you, she’ll more than likely be able to put you in touch with someone who can. I’ve heard good things about New Leaf also. I go to Eagle Consulting and while they are typically faith-based, they ask if you would like faith integrated into care and I said no way and that has been respected so far. You could also call 211 for a listing of private providers, although they can’t help you navigate insurance or anything like that.

I can’t speak for the PTSD/combat therapist but my wife has been going to Huntsville Psychotherapy and Counseling for 3 years now and speaks very highly of them. She is also very non-biblical and has experienced zero problems on that front. Monretta Vega is her counselor there and she recommends her to anyone who asks this question.

Something you can look for is to see if they say they do Christian Counseling or Biblical Counseling. Someone with a degree in Christian Counseling has a masters in counseling and has taken thw state certification exams. They have just taken extra studies to incorperate christian spiritual theory for those that want that as part of the process. Someone who is a Biblical counseler however is certified byvtheir faith based organization and often echews modern psychotheory for "pray it away" feelings. They are not the same thing. As a Beliving Christian, i will not see a Biblical counsoler, other than my pastor for spiritual issues.

Just because they are “Christian counselors” doesn’t mean they are going to go all “biblical” on you. They have the same degrees and awards as the “regular” guys but they also studied other things. Give them a try

I saw Dr. Hoffman at Valley Christian Counseling, not looking for religion in my sessions. On the intake form they ask you your preferences, and in my experience respect your wishes!

I just wanted to remark on the amount of positive replies to this post. Way to go Huntsville! As a fellow vet & atheist living in Huntsville isnt always easy. The secular community definitely exists but is far out numbered. I hope you find success in your search and take solace in the fact that you are not now, nor ever alone.

I don’t have any recommendations, but if you’re getting into contact with “religious” counselors/psychologists etc trying to peddle their religion, you’ve stumbled onto the wrong method of searching. Try using your insurance provider’s list of approved practitioners or searching through the APA’s online search function. This should help find people who are a) licensed and b) trying to provide real mental health/medical services and not people just trying to sell you their religion.

Heather Sewall is the best counselor I’ve ever had but I don’t know if she does combat/PTSD counseling. Good luck on your search!

My boyfriend goes to Bridgeway Counseling for his anxiety. So far he really likes it and there’s no mention of religion unless he brings it up. I would suggest looking up licensed psychologists through your insurance provider. Christian therapists aren’t exactly the most helpful when it comes to severe mental illnesses.
