Others can comment on the shelters, but you are already a member of IARA, so we're always looking for people to come out and get involved with our events! www.facebook.com/groups/IndianaARA

I walk dogs at Indianapolis Animal Care and Control on the south side. They always need volunteers. Those poor pups can spend 23 hrs a day in those kennels. And welcome to Indy!

I volunteer at the Humane society of Indianapolis. They have a pretty great volunteer program and they don't euthanize for space so you do not have to worry about getting attached to animals that might not be there when you come back. However, I am sure that Animal Care and Control needs more help and has fewer volunteers. There are also some other great shelters in surrounding areas. The Humane Society of Hamilton County is awesome. They are an open admission shelter and have a 3% euthanasia rate. If you have any questions, I have been involved in animal sheltering for years!! Good luck and so glad you're thinking about giving your love and time to stray animals in Indianapolis! Welcome ;) http://www.indyhumane.org/

Here is Indianapolis Animal Care and Control volunteer page. They are the municipal shelter for Marion County, they are open admission and do euthanize. However, Indianapolis is moving to be a low kill/no kill city. They have been selected by TZI (Target Zero Institue). http://www.indy.gov/eGov/City/DPS/ACCD/Volunteering/Pages/home.aspx

We get many posts and requests for rehoming assistance for cats and kittens - Our focus is TNR and community cat management but we want to help. Please check out ReTails http://www.retailsindy.org/ and the other adoption/rescue options available at this link http://facespayneuter.org/resources/shelter-resources/ They can help with rehoming tips and have far more resources than we do. Please share these resources to help others. Thanks for helping a kitty in need.

Indy Humane for sure. Retails, Helping Paws Lisa Johnson, and I believe we still have a lengthy wait list.

Used the Tails & Trails in Greenwood when my uncle passed and left his two dogs behind. We were happy with them, and they followed-up to let me know they had found a home for the dogs.

Misty Eyes on the west side is awesome. I have a coworker who fixed and sent several litters of feral kittens to them and they've all been adopted out. Yes the mamas that kept bringing her babies have also been TNR so the feral colony on her land doesn't continue to grow.

Try looking into ReTails, they allow you to put your pet up for adoption through their shelter network! I believe their website is retailsindy.org

I've always been impressed with the Southside Animal Shelter on Edgewood, west of Meridian. Amazing job they do.

Angie, You will want to contact Indianapolis Animal Care and Control, if possible. They may be able to send someone out to pick up the dogs. Otherwise, if someone is able to capture them and keep them temporarily, they can make an appointment to bring them here. Here is a link to details on that process: http://indyhumane.org/surrender_pet Hope this helps!
