If combustion is going into the coolant bad enough you may be able to see some bubbles in the coolant reservoir. Or smell combustion gas in the reservoir. Also, make sure you follow the correct fill procedure so there is no air trapped in the system. I bought a car 6 weeks ago that was supposed to need a head gasket. They said it got hot and didn't blow any heat. I knew it wasn't the head gasket because it ran too good. The only problem was it had a tiny water leak, but when they refilled it they didn't get the air out so it didn't have enough coolant in it. Once I got the system FULL of coolant it heated great and now runs perfect and never over heats. I have to add a small amount of coolant periodically but when the weather changes I will fix it. The leak is somewhere near the thermostat housing so maybe just a gasket. End result, 2002 Grand Prix in nice condition for $800. Cha ching.
