April S. replied:
There is also a dermatologist/allergy specialist who comes to the island once a quarter or so--you can contact Kilani Pet Clinic in Wahiawa to request an appointment, but they do go to several different vet offices while they are here, so you can ask your vet if they come to an office closer to you. Most feline skin issues are allergy-based if they aren't fungal or mange/mites. Since your vet should have easily been able to address fungal or mange/mites issues, and you havent described the symptoms, for simplicity sake I'll describe typical treatment for allergies. Most feline allergies are food based, and the dermatologist will generally want you to rule that out before doing any skin tests. You start by switching your kitty to a grain-free novel protien if your vet hasn't already had you do so. A novel protien is a type of protien your cat has not previously been exposed to. I have a cat and a dog who are both HIGHLY allergic to chicken. So if you are not on a prescription diet (those are expensive!), you can look at the limited ingredient diets like Dick VanPatten's. I would recommend against a fish-based diet because that is actually the most common feline allergy. Look for rabbit, duck, lamb, or quail. Turkey may work for a while, but my cat who is allergic to chicken has started reacting to that as well. ALWAYS read the ingredients--sometimes they use "poultry fat" which could be from chicken, turkey, or duck. If it is an allergy, you should see results within 6 weeks on the new diet. In the meantime, your vet may prescribe antibiotics if she has open sores or steroids if she is horribly itchy. Steroids are REALLY hard on cat kidneys, so keep her off of them unless she is just constantly scratching herself bloody. For either steroids or antibiotics, it is absolutely critical to follow the dosing instructions, even after your cat is feeling better. Good luck, and please keep us posted! We all learn from each other's experiences.
April S. replied:
I'm currently feeding my allergy kitty a prescription rabbit and green pea from royal canin. It's expensive ($65 for an 8lb bag!) But the advantage of a precription food vs. The limited ingredient diets is that they are required by law to wash down their equipment between batches of different types of food, so you know that the contents of the bag/can are exactly what they say they are. There are no such requirements for processing of other types of food, even the limited ingredient diets. I fed Wellness Core grain-free Turkey and Duck to my allergy cat for a couple of years and she did fine on it, but she stared reacting to it, so either there was some cross contamination with chicken or she's become allergic to turkey (the allergist said the protien structure is very similar and was actually surprised that she had done so well on it for so long). She seems to be okay with duck, so far, but she likes the rabbit better. If your vet suggests a hydrolyzed protien prescription, just ask for the rabbit and green pea instead--hydrolyzed protien is essentially chicken that has been cooked and processed to the point where the protien structure is changed (hydrogen has bonded to it) so it no longer binds to the allergy receptors. We know hydrolyzed fat is bad for us; I can't see how a hydrolyzed protien diet can be good for a cat in the long term.

Left untreated, seasonal allergies often progress to year-round allergies Allergic pets are typically very itchy, and the itch-scratch cycle results in irritated, inflamed skin that invites secondary bacterial infections There are a number of simple, all-natural steps guardians of an allergic dog or cat can take to relieve their pet’s discomfort The first step is to address the animal’s diet and the possibility of leaky gut syndrome Other steps include avoiding all unnecessary vaccines and veterinary drugs, provide irrigation therapy, and offer natural antihistamine support

Yes, I forgot about them. But HHS is not certificates--it's the $10 month. A new program--they try to do once in a while. Don't leave your pets here over night or on an operation tables with them as I have seen how un-sanitary their place is in the back.

Thank you all! I've had a bad experience with a vet in Waipahu. I started taking my other kitty Khan to the Animal House in Ewa Beach. They were okay. I have not taken T.K. there yet, since all of his vet trips so far have been to the expensive after hours/emergency places. I will continue to monitor T.K.'s condition throughout the evening. Waipahu/Waikele was great for us in the past and we still go there for emergencies. They have a sister clinic in Wahiawa called Wahiawa Animal Hospital. We love Dr Crabtree who is on maternity leave. She definitely needs a vet. That discharge is indicative of an infection. She'll likely need antibiotic ointment, at the very least, and possibly oral antibiotics. What part of the island do you live? Feather & Fur in Kailua is fantastic, and a 24/7 emergency vet with long appointment hours, so they can likely get you in quickly; Kapolei Pet Hospital is great if you're out that direction. I'm sure others can jump in with additional suggestions for other parts of the island. Those are the two best ones I've used, by far.

Ashley S. replied:
Feather & Fur is wonderful! I was actually just there this morning. They are not inexpensive, but they're excellent. You might want to stick with some of the more experienced vets there, like Dr. Walsh or Dr. Hancock. I heard of a recent experience where one of the newer vets was suggesting more tests and vaccines than what I've come to expect as necessary. One of the other great things about them are their hours - they're a 24/7 emergency vet, have appts until 8:30, walk-ins until midnight, and their emergency fee of $75 only kicks in after midnight.

Dr. Haddock at Kailua Animal Clinic is excellent and very fair

I currently have an 18 yr old cat who had a wound on her leg that wouldn't heal. The vet did do blood work because she was so skinny, but I think if she had just had the wound then the vet likely would have just suggested antibiotics. I really like the Convenia shot for skin wounds. Hopefully it isn't cancer. My vet is Dr. Kinoshita at VCA Waipahu. I really like her because she can think outside of the box. Tell her what your goal is for the visit. With the antibiotic shot and the exam you are looking at like $130.
