Generally you can't reuse the tread if it was under carpet because it will be crappy grade contractor wood. If you patch and paint (as opposed to stain) the risers, you may salvage those. Our stairs and landing did add an expense of about $3,500 to our flooring budget. The stain was a pain to get matched to our purchased hardwood also. It took two tries! We also had an issue with the molding around the steps, that was covered by the prior carpeting, so another $500 was a "bonus" cost we didn't expect. We used Buckeye Flooring. They stayed late to get the job done by completion date and came back to repair an issue that they messed up.
