I've been to a place called Beniya which is not too bad - they have a few menu options, all under 20,000 yen...I'd recommend making a reservation quickly... http://kibune-beniya.jp/

Hi, I know a few places in Pontocho. What's your budget like? Would you prefer to have Japanese food? Can you read menu in Japanese? Sorry, it might sound a bit awkward. But some of the restaurants don't have English Menu and not even pictures on the menu. So, it would be a bit tricky, if you don't speak or read Japanese. I can paste some links of restaurants there. Hope it works out. ;-) Here are some of my favorite restaurants. Robin http://r.gnavi.co.jp/k724700/lang/en/?sc_cid=foreign_bnr_pcr_en The restaurant building is really cool. They renovated 150 years old traditional house Machiya into the restaurant. So, it looks pretty neat. Toriyasa http://r.gnavi.co.jp/kakg600/premium/ This could be a bit too pricy. 15000 yen- 18000 yen This restaurant has been here for 230 years.(Since 1788.) Ryoma Sakamoto often ate here. And it's Michelin starred restaurant as well. Really good Chicken Mizutaki. Yamatomi http://tabelog.com/kyoto/A2603/A260301/26001114/ This one is really reasonable. Casual restaurant. Try their Tetsupin Kushiage (Basically you can cook your own Kushiage (Meat on skewers) with a traditional iron teapot.) Akaneya Jyunshinnken http://r.gnavi.co.jp/k470200/lang/en/?sc_cid=foreign_bnr_pcr_en It's Sumibiyaki (charcoal-grilled) restaurant. Reasonable price and nice atmosphere. Again, this is old Machiya (Traditional House), and they renovated as the restaurant. Oh, here is the nice platform terrace bar. Atlantis http://www.atlantis-net.co.jp They have English menu and pretty impressive Japanese Whisky selection. If you need more help, please let me know. I know Kyoto pretty well. There are some really nice Sake bars too. ;-) Hope you and your friend have a great time in Kyoto!

You are welcome! ;-) Here are some of my favorite Sake bars. Hanna http://tabelog.com/kyoto/A2602/A260201/26019532/ Some of the places serve you Sake by "gou" But this one serves you Sake by a glass. So, you can try lots of different Sake. They have a good Sake selection from Kyoto and Shiga. (Because of the owner lady, She is originally from Shiga.) Yoramu http://tabelog.com/kyoto/A2602/A260202/26001144/ Really good sake selection. Their Kikizake(Tasting) set is very reasonable price. I think the owner guy is from Israel. A bit far from the platform terrace restaurants area, but totally worth to walk over there. Moromine http://tabelog.com/kyoto/A2602/A260201/26017974/ This one is owned by Saito Sake Brewery from Fushimi, Kyoto. Located near by Nishiki Market. Their sake "Eikun" is absolutely amazing. It's my favorite Sake. They have been awarded as No.1 Sake in all over Japan for 13 years.(Maybe 14 years? Well, it's been long time! For sure! lol) I know the guy who is the brew master there. He is my dad's friend. Asakura http://tabelog.com/kyoto/A2603/A260301/26003502/ They have over 100 different kinds of Sake. It's amazing selection.Nice atmosphere too. Try their 3 kinds of defferent Kikizake (Tasting) set. Hope these information help you! ;-) Enjoy Kyoto!

They are open 11 am to 7 pm except on Tuesdays and holidays, and encourage reserving ahead of time. I also found [this blog post](http://14 ge.com/?p=2961) about it, which has some more pictures. The name of the restaurant is 河道屋養老 (Kawamichiya Yoro) if you want to do further Googling.
