Kitchen Contractor Recommendations? I'm looking for a contractor to replace my kitchen counter-tops (along with the sink) as well as replace a sliding back patio door....
IDreamOfRedditing replied:
I like Kurt of Time 2 Remodel as a person, although I declined to hire him for my own project because his bid was 53% higher than the median bid for my specific project. If you're just looking for two things where work flow doesn't really conflict much, you don't really need a general contractor like Kurt - you just need to find a countertop fabricator/installer for that, and someone else for the patio doors. On the subject of the patio doors: Home Depot's $429 basic install will have it's cost balloon by 50% or more after your measure. They add $100 automatically to every order, and then the contractor will pad the bid out considerably from there. I'd recommend against them, even if you end up using them for your door. Most of the windows/door/exterior people use high pressure sales tactics (the price goes down by 40-50% if you say yes on the spot), AHT, Mad City Windows, and Tundraland all do this. They also insist that all 'decision makers' (meaning both you and any spouse) are present for their extended in home sales presentation. This is so they can play you off against each other. If you really want to hire a general contractor (although I personally recommend GC'ing this one yourself), John Thompson of Thompson Custom Builders is someone I've had very good experiences with. His subcontractors show up on time, perform high quality work, and his contract is an extremely reasonable one (50% draw after rough-in work is finished, 50% at completion of job.)

[Remodeling Consultants](http://remodeling-consultants.com/) While I never had any work done by them, I came pretty close to doing an engineering internship with them. Their work is top notch, and they take pride in what they do. Their main bread and butter is kitchens and baths, so they may be a bit uncomfortable with basements but I can't say for sure.
You may want to find someone who specializes in basements because the technology used can differ, based on moisture levels. I would say its generally a good idea to spend the extra money on waterproofing measures. You don't want to be doing something twice. Also be sure to ask about who they sub out their engineering work to if you're going to do anything structural, find out who their subs are because that can change based on budget (They may be willing to try a new sub on you if your budget is low enough, which in the end could burn you, not them). Ask about materials they'll be using. A question I like to ask about is how they feel about [Zip Board](http://www.huberwood.com/zipsystem/home-zip-system). Its an easy way to find out how they feel about innovating with technology and if they really understand costs (upfront cost is higher, but less labor is required. And a product like [Ditra](http://www.schluter.com/schluter-us/en_US/Membranes/Uncoupling-\(DITRA\)/Schluter%C2%AE-DITRA-&-DITRA-XL/p/DITRA) would be nice to see in the bathrooms.
