Thanks Marilyn and Marcos. There were four Main POW Camps (Camp Clark, Camp Crowder, Fort Leonard Wood and Camp Weingarten) and 26 Branch Camps. In western Missouri, there were POW Branch Camps in Riverside, Liberty, Independence, Orrick, Lexington, Grand Pass, and Marshall. The Branch Camps were set up to make up for labor shortages. The more rural camps were set up around planting, tending and harvesting crops, so weren't always operating year-round. The information on the Lexington Camp is scarce, so it is great to see folks' comments.

This book provides a good account of Missouri WWII POW's generally, but it doesn't have much info on the camp in Lexington. According to the author: "Life as a POW in the thirty camps scattered across Missouri was a surprisingly pleasant experience. The men ate well and were quartered under the same conditions as the Americans assigned to guard them, and the prisoners often enjoyed a great deal of freedom. The internees worked on local farms, often "guarded" only by a bored GI snoozing under a shade tree. They organized camp theater troupes, sports leagues and orchestras. . . http://www.amazon.com/The-Enemy-Among-Us-Missouri/dp/098302250X

Anyone know anything about the old camp on the river way out McCowans Ferry? Why it closed? What happened there? Any pictures? Any ideas about it?

Mrs. Van Meter was a neighbor of ours in Lexington before we moved to Versailles she used to be director there.

Think Rand McNally had summer picnic there in 1974.

Found this old news story: (Aug. 14, 1959, Beckley Post-Herald) Whites Terrorize Camping Negroes VERSAILLES, Ky. (AP) -- A group of white men fired guns in the vicinity of a camp for Negro girls Thursday and tried unsuccessfully to burn down a cabin. Officials said the men were seen by only one person near the scene and evidently did not fire directly at the girls. Public Safely Commissioner Don Sturgill dispatched troopers to the scene and camp officials said they would begin immediate evacuation of the children. There were no reports of injuries. Mrs. E. Richardson, executive director of the Negro branch of the Lexington YMCA, said about 27 girls were in the camp when the shooting started. Sturgill said he would guarantee safety for the children if they remained in camp. Sturgill told The Associated Press: "Those children are entitled to be in the camp. I certainly hope that the camp director will not evacuate them, thereby yielding to the threats of armed hoodlums. 'We are perfectly capable of guaranteeing their safety." Camp Otonka is operated for the Negro children, all from the Lexington area, only two weeks out of the year. White children use it the rest of the time. Mrs. Richardson said she could offer no explanation for the incident.

Cindy L. replied:
Uganda Bible Society or Scripture Union - Uganda are the way to go with this venture. Shipping Bibles is very, very expensive. I use the Uganda Bible Society for the needs of the college. They have Bibles in English and in the various local languages. I have been in Uganda for almost 4 years and have learned so much in how to minister in this context.
