How technically savy are you? I did a byte for byte recovery by hooking up an identical drive to an ubuntu machine, using ddrrescue and copying over from the crashed drive. Took me a couple of hours work, and the thing ran for a couple of days. And I recovered about 80% of it. The trick was to make sure both drives were identical in hardware. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery ddrescue bit is what you need to read.

yeah, these guys: http://www.laptop-repairs.com/ Recovered data and replaced hd. I don't remember how much they charged me, but it was cheaper than others. The staff were nice too. EDIT: Seeing other comments. It wasn't anywhere near £1000. Less that £250 for sure.
