Fabric Shops in London, United Kingdom

Markets can be a good place, where I live it's mostly market, independent stores hidden back from the main high street (including a warehouse style one on an industrial estate though that's aimed at quilters), they don't tend to have websites but you can usually find them by searching "fabric" on google maps. There are lots of shops online, but I dunno what the best is, I've used a few and can never remember which but never had any problems either.

There isn't really a national chain for fabric/sewing supplies in the UK. Fabric Land is probably the closest we get, but that still feels very much like a local independent shop. Your best bet is to search 'fabric shops' on Google Maps and keep visiting until you find one that works for you.

[Fabrics Galore](https://www.fabricsgalore.co.uk/) in Battersea is pretty good. Not huge but they have a decent selection and most excitingly for me, usually have old-season Liberty fabrics at lower prices.

You'll find interesting fabrics on Berwick Street in Soho. Online, [Fabworks](https://www.fabworks.co.uk/) in Dewsbury has an eclectic selection. They get a lot of ends of ranges from clothing manufacturers. They're worth a visit if you're ever close enough but I can't really recommend Dewsbury apart from that.

Depending how far east you are, a good option is Birmingham's rag market. They also have several very good fabric stores right near the train station

Fabric land is good. I believe there is one in Kingston.

Sew Simple near Taverham in Norfolk might be worth a look - I've not been for a few years, but it was definitely very well-stocked when I used to go there.

Unless you have a good shop local to you then online is your best option! All the major stores are mostly rubbish for fabrics and overpriced

I have this issue, round here it’s John Lewis or a pretty dire branch of Fabric Land. For an online shop try https://www.girlcharlee.co.uk, my seamstress friend has some gorgeous fabric from there. Not cheap though.

I find quality can be very hit and miss online. John Lewis has a good selection but it’s overpriced. I find Minerva Crafts tends to be reasonable quality for a reasonable price and has a fairly wide selection. I feel it’s better quality than fabric land with a wider range.

If you are coming down into Essex, The Cheep Shop in Tiptree has a very good selection. It's at the very end of the high street, towards the jam factory.

Have you considered joining some UK quilting groups on Facebook? I’ve found it exceptionally helpful for my crochet and finding supplies

Hobbycraft might be a good option - there are branches all over the place and from the look of it they carry a reasonable selection online. I'm sure there are loads of independent places in London especially if you know where to go. Perhaps it's worth asking in /r/sewing if anyone there knows any good places.

The most well known area for fabric shops,in London at least, is Goldhawk Road in Shepherds Bush. Walthamstow market has a shed-load of fabric shops. There's large African, middle-Eastern and Indian-Asian populations there, so lots of them sell really lovely fabrics by the metre - all sorts of stuff in all sorts of patterns, fabrics, and colours. I'm a photographer, and frequently go there for interesting backdrops for portraits.

It can be hit or miss. I live in a smaller town but we have a veritable fabric emporium. I used to live somewhere much bigger and it was all quilting fat quarters. Where do you live? I find independent places better but it’ll depend where you are really. Edit: you said where you live in your post. I’m just being dozy this morning! London has several haberdashers in soho - on and around berwick street but they can be on the pricier side. Otherwise maybe ask on a uk-based crafting forum? The closest we have to a chain is fabric land but I don’t love it - but have a google and see if there’s one nearby.

Online try Pound fabrics and Aliexpress. Fabricland and Fabric galore (gourgous fabrics) both have London shops and are online. Wimbledon sewing machine between tooting and Balham is a warehouse of crafts and close to all the fabric shops (sari and linen mostly) in tooting. John lewis often have a fabric section. I haven't been to Norwich in decades, that used to have a good fabric stall on the market. Bury St edmunds look to have a fabric shop. Gordon thodays used to be the best fabric shop in Ipswich, that went years ago.

Physical shops are harder to come by but John Lewis has the best selection of dressmaking fabrics where I live. The ones I know of in East Anglia are The Fent Shop in King's Lynn, there's also Plush Addict in Peterborough which I have only been in once, but I think there may be a couple of others in Peterborough too.
