I just did this. Got the Audio Technica 120 turntable, a $50 behringer preamp and I'm using M-Audio studio monitor speakers. Sounds great.
Mark D. replied:
Check Needledoctor.com. Good deals on some turntables( Projekt, audio technica, etc) . I've gotten some totally decent stuff off Craigslist too. Scored an old NAD receiver for $80 that I love. Speakers-I like Polk Audio, Boston Acoustics.

There are cheap ones like this(you can also google and find some in the $300,$500 price range if you want) http://www.ebay.com/itm/FOB01-Fiber-Optic-Sound-System-Adapter-for-Mercedes-Benz-E-Class-W211-CL-SLK-SL-/142102860039?hash=item2115 fd9107:g:J1MAAOSwpLNYBKDo I used that with a chinese head unit and was not really happy with the sound ultimately. It worked don't get me wrong but it was a little buggy at times. Ultimately I am waiting to get a new AMP I just haven't got around to researching which one to buy yet and stuff.
Johan S. replied:
Thank you David Gibb, i am going to order that device and try it and also replace head unit with this one http://www.brl.se/sv/artiklar/alpine-ine-w990 bt.html

I take my stuff to Hi-Fidelity in Los Feliz. They have a guy they bring stuff to work on, but it sometimes takes a while because they say he's one of those crazy geniuses that's great but unreliable. edit: by unreliable I mean they told me it would take say 3 weeks, but it took 2 months because they can't hold him to a deadline...he can fix anything though apparently

I can you recommend some from audiokarma (A/V forum) that does A/V repairs from his home in Los Angeles. His prices are fair, very knowledgable, and honest. He did some work on my Marantz 2325 and was very happy with his work. He's gotten good reviews on Audiokarma.
