Anyone know of a reliable used car dealership? Looking to keep the budget under $4,000. If anyone knows places that have a large inventory for this price I'd appreciate...

Carmax is legit but they may not have much in that price range. Otherwise your best bet is craigslist and taking the car to a AAA certified mechanic for an inspection.

I'd buy from owner from Craigslist or auto trader

Where exactly are you going to be buying the car?

[Here](http://www.yelp.com) is a place to start. Used car market is hot right now. It's gonna be tough to find a good deal. You could find a point inspection sheet online and check the car out yourself. Mechanics aren't fortune tellers, and they can't see inside the engine. Just drive the car and listen for weird noises. Look at tires and hoses for any cracks, rotting, or exposed steel belts. Ask the owner lots of questions.

please be aware that a title and registration cannot transfer in California without a smog check completed in the last 30 days. if the car is from the 80 s, the standards are unbelievably strict. you can't own it until it passes, and that could be thousands of dollars in repairs. when my toy car is due for smog in 2 years, if the $5 fix won't pass it, I'm donating it to kidney cars. the state doesn't joke around, and you have to find some *really* shady people in order to cheat them.

Give the tires a good kick. If the entire wheel falls off it is probably not a good vehicle.
