Any other Square Foot Gardeners in this group? For me, the hardest part was sourcing the five different types of compost. The usual suspects are generally easy --...
Lois M. replied:
According to Mel Bartholomew, who wrote the Square Foot Gardening, the basic mix he recommends is 1 part peat moss, 1 part coarse vermiculite and 1 part compost (a blend of five different types). "Compost Tips – blended compost means five different types. Some common ones are cow, horse or poultry manure, green waste, or worm castings. Go to a few different nurseries or stores and compare ingredients on the bags of compost and buy a variety. One super easy way to have a blended compost is to start your own compost pile and use that!" http://squarefootgardening.org/square-foot-gardening-method
Jacky S. replied:
You can always add worm castings, homemade compost, etc to the soil. There is a store at Jefferson and Wezel called Fresh Start Growers Supplies. I'm sure they could assist you in amending your mix Betsy Ramey. 502-442-7883. 1007 Jefferson Street.
Are there any tiny house builders within Michigan that offer financing? I am on limited income but am tired of paying other people's mortgages. Thank you.
