Does anybody know of any place (within a reasonable distance to Louisville), where we can take Bella for a CT scan of her brain, for under $1500.
We just can't afford...
Vicki B. replied:
Call Shively Animal. I know my friend called places who wanted $2700 for a scope on her dog and Shively did it for $500 I think. They can be frustrating to get hold of and appointment wait time is long but it is a LOT cheaper than most places.
Nancy B. replied:
My understanding is that Metropolitan is the only veterinary option for CT scan in Louisville. Blue Pearl refers their more complicated neurology cases to a place in Georgetown KY, but their prices are roughly the same as Metropolitan's.
Casey S. replied:
Yes they do but Blue Pearl has a CT machine if that's all that's needed. wink emoticon
Nancy B. replied:
Well that is strange, because they even gave me another place to call. The # I called was 244-3036.
Vicki H. replied:
Looks like VCA Fairleigh Animal Hospital on Bardstown road has CT scans and MRI.
Tabitha P. replied:
You could ask Elk Creek Animal Hospital.
Casey S. replied:
Blue Pearl!
Nancy B. replied:
Shively does not do CT scans, neither does Jefferson Animal Hospital or even Blue Pearl. In Louisville, only Metropolitan has the machine, or at least according to all the other vets they are the only option. I'm searching for somewhere outside of Louisville, if the price makes it worthwhile.
Casey S. replied:
Blue Pearl does have the equipment and I just called to verify. 244-3036

Best doctor is Dr.Becherer. I've had a total of 6 brain surgeries within a year. I wouldn't trust anyone else in this world to do them. I have always felt like he did what was best for me. There were times he would show up at the hospital at 10 pm because I had been admitted and he wanted to see first hand what was going on.
Nancy R. replied:
Dr Nazar is fantastic--he knows his stuff. Ask any of his former or current patients, as well as any nurse at Norton's Hospital that's worked with him. None better! He tells you like it is!
Does anyone have any neurologist recommendations that has experience with this in or within a couple hour drive of Louisville Kentucky like Indy, Cincy, or even...

Star- I see a great neuro ophthalmologist in Cincy. His name is Karl Golnik
Sherri G. replied:
Star.... I was diagnosed in 2001 and I have had over 16 LP's done to relieve the pressure when I get really bad migraines that are PTC related. You can tell if your migraine is just a migraine or PTC related by the wooshing you hear in your ears. Sadly there is no "cure" for PTC. You can only control the symptoms with meds... such as Diamox, Lasik, Topomax and a few others that I have forgotten about over the years. I personally couldn't tolerate any of the meds, especially the Diamox and haven't taken any meds since 2006. The side effects were sometimes worse than my daily symptoms. As a side note... AVOID Tetracylcene as an antibiotic as it will INCREASE your pressure and be sure to drinks LOTS of water. After seeing 3 different Neurologists in Louisville, I was teamed up with Dr Baker, a Neuro Opthamologist at UK, for my optic nerve sheath fenestration on both eyes. He is actually the doctor that designed this surgery. When your pressure gets really high the fluid puts pressure on your optic discs and it can damage your vision, shrinking your peripheral vision and eventually can cause you to go blind. With optic nerve sheath fenestration they cut a slit in the sheath over he nerve and tack it back so that the fluid can seep out and absorb naturally back into your body relieving the pressure. For me, I have been able to reduce the frequency of my PTC induced migraines with weight loss. It has been a slow process but it has helped greatly! I was given an option with a Neurosurgeon to have either a LP shunt or a VP shunt. After all of the research and reading about the consistent failures and infections with LP shunts I had decided to get a VP shunt. I met with a Neurosurgeon to get it scheduled and the following week I found out that I was pregnant after 10 months of seeing a fertility doctor and fertility drugs. I put the surgery on the back burner (and I am glad I did) and after my second pregnancy with twins I got serious about losing the weight to help with my condition. I personally believe that there is a link between PTC and PCOS even though there hasn't been any research to show that. I have been on many message boards and I always ask if they too have PCOS... every single person I have spoken too says yes. I wish that someone, somewhere would take this PSEUDO disease seriously enough to put some research behind it to find a cure or better ways to manage it. I wish you luck and if you ever want to meet up for support don't hesitate to reach out to me as I am local! heart emoticon

Star... I am in Louisville. I have PTC and have had optic nerve sheath fenestration done on both eyes by Dr Baker in Lexington at UK. I have seen many of the neurologists in Louisville and they are all terrible lol. I highly recommend that you see a Neuro Opthamologist and not a Neurologist. Feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions.
